"From fairies on lightning bugs to sneezy dream dragons and pajama-making mice, these simple sleepytime stories will gently sweep your child away into dreamland."
In the first short story, "Maya and the Dream Dragon," young Maya has difficulty sleeping, as is common with many children. She was trying to select something to dream about when a magnificent creature caught her eye; it was a dragon outside her bedroom window. The beautiful dragon enlists her help, bringing dreams to all the sleepless children across the city. This short read is full of adventure and wonderment. Kids will adore it and might wish on a star to one day have a dragon visit them for a ride across the night sky.
In "The Not-So-Sleepy Princess," the young lady was too excited to sleep. Again, parents can relate to this situation. But, in time and with much assistance, everyone could achieve a restful night's sleep. Even though I didn't mention by name the other stories in the collection, they all (as a whole) are creative tales that many households will love to read at bedtime or any time of day.
From a design point of view, I would've liked some separation from the picture and words because it appears too busy, and some pages are more challenging to read for one of two reasons. One: the white text with the sparkling white stars conflicts with each other; the reader's eye is drawn to the stars, not the text. Two: the background is too busy under the text, which may cause a young reader to lose focus. The images themselves are phenomenal. They are probably the best illustrations I've seen in a very long time. However, the layout doesn't allow me to appreciate them to their full potential.
The author's recommended reading age is 2-7 years. Even though the stories are short, I would share this story with four years olds and older. Two-year-olds will love the images, though.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
