Synopsis
A bountiful summer. A harsh winter. A family on the run from danger. Strangers with glowing green eyes and big teeth. Snarling. The scent of blood everywhere.
A young wolf, wandering the woods with his sister, looking for his Ma and Pa. He knows he will find them at the ocean, and he's willing to go there, however long it takes.
But life does not stop for lost and wandering pups.
Brilliant White Peaks is a raw, emotional journey told from a young wolf's perspective.
Brilliant White Peaks follows the life story of a wolf cub as he grows up and learns about the world. In his struggle with the brutal reality of life in the wild, and with other wolves, he loses his family (pack) and has to go on a journey to find them. On this journey, he encounters friendship, love, and loss as he fights for survival alongside his sister and her mate. Then, later, when the parents couldn't be found, the young protagonist ventures out on his own and finds a mate of his own. The story continues and follows the protagonist and his mate.
The story is told in a very intimate first person POV of the unnamed protagonist. The language is simple and the descriptions are visceral and beautiful. I absolutely love how Teng Rong wrote the book so that there are no references to anything a wolf would not know. There's nothing cliche or cheesy in Brilliant White Peaks. It is all very very raw and very very real.
The plot is engaging even though nothing big-picture happens. We know nothing about this world except the trails and forests and mountains the protagonist sees.
The moments when the wolves sing for their families. That was so beautiful.
CW: Death of parents. Death of children. Unfiltered descriptions of violence, blood, wolves eating other animals.
