Timothy Nils – I very much appreciate Mathew Mill's incisive review of my debut novel, 'At The Next Spring.' And also the professional support of Reedsy's editors and cover designer who have helped me to stay on track and sharpen my focus.
As a native Londoner (of generations back to at least the 1860s), I'm constantly intrigued by the history and dramas that infuse its streets. It is this sense of the past -its burdens and its reproach - that have helped me to fashion my hero's dilemma as he is thrust into a world that he must make sense of while finding the resources to confront its - not always worthy -ambitions.
I will own up to endeavouring to place my protagonist into the wider context of the hero's journey as it is captured in myth and literature ... but then he is a student, and so he must learn.
In researching the work, I have visited all the places in the book (except the Foreign Secretary's office!), run endless drafts in front of skeptical critics, and bowed to experience when I was unsure of a path to take.
I write under a pen name (that hints also at a Scandinavian connection) but my dog really is called Pontus.
