Tory and Darcy's days at Zodiac Academy continue, but not without trepidation.
The Reckoning is the third instalment in the Zodiac Academy series by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.
This book follows Tory and Darcy as they navigate the week of The Reckoning. As always, the twins are targeted not only by the Celestial Heirs but also by their fellow students in an attempt to make them go back to the mortal world. We also see developments for the girls and their respective love interests. That's pretty much it.
I still enjoyed this book, despite a lot of it feeling like filler — the book was nearly 600 pages long and that felt unnecessary in my opinion. We finally get some insight into The Reckoning and how important it is but it was pretty underwhelming in the end. The main development we got in terms of the plot was the romance. The relationship between Darcy and Orion is definitely heating up and it feels like we actually got some insightful dialogue between the two. As I mentioned in a previous review, the student-teacher relationship doesn't do anything for me, so I struggled to become invested in their budding romance, but regardless they're fine together. It seems as though we have finally established a love triangle between Tory, Caleb and Darius, which is more interesting to me simply based on the potential that both Darius and Caleb have for character development.
The writing is okay, the quality definitely drops off as opposed to book one, but it's fairly easy to follow what is going on. The moments of action in the book, especially at the end were the best as it felt as though we were actually progressing with the plot. On the whole, the Heirs, besides Caleb/Darius, were pretty non-existent in this book.
I think it's time to take a break from this series so I can branch out elsewhere and not exhaust myself. Zodiac Academy is a great series so far, and I am enjoying myself, but I don't want to feel as though I'm reading for the sake of finishing the series. I'll definitely pick it back up one day!
