A practical guide to learning how to consistently generate ideas that will help you live a more creative and fulfilling life
The book's goal is to help the reader develop innovative ideas. Whether those ideas are giant multi-million-dollar businesses or simply ways to improve everyday activities, this book describes a process that can be used to help the reader originate and cultivate ideas that can change their life. Each section features exercises that will challenge the reader's perspective, improve creativity and help them become a better problem solver. The first of six sections outlines how to notice problems, needs, wants and questions. The second section examines how to erase stigmas or assumptions about these problems, needs, wants and questions. Next, the book investigates how to create solutions to these problems, needs and wants using the skills learned from the first sections. The reader takes those solutions to section four where they do a feasibility check to see if the solutions are viable. Section five explains how and why the reader should share those ideas and solutions to receive feedback and improve upon them. The final section explores the next steps to follow to implement these innovative ideas. Ultimately, "Your Next Big Idea" is essentially a complete program that guides the reader to come up with their own next big idea.
Your Next Big Idea is a book with a practical component--quite like a workbook. The author promises to help you generate 100 ideas per week consistently.
Sounds incredible, doesn't it?
You must work through each of the exercises in the book if you want to get any benefit out of it. A simple read-through will not help. For purposes of this review, I did some of the exercises and I intend to re-read the book and finish the rest.
You begin by learning how to identify problems (that will help you generate ideas), move on to removing mind blocks that prevent you from thinking creatively, and discover new ways to jog those brain cells.
The exercises are creative and engaging and incorporate all kinds of activity - writing, drawing, critical thinking (of course!).
So many theoretical concepts are described in the book, but the author has reduced the tedium of text blocks by alternating them with thoughtful exercises.
I do think, however, that fewer words could have been used and the book could have been much shorter. The author repeats himself in many places, possibly to drive home his point. I felt it was unnecessary but then, I pay close attention to every sentence I read. Other readers may need the additional hand-holding to absorb the material.
I loved the clean format of the pages, the subtle no-fuss designs, and the carefully chosen fonts.
The section about determining the business feasibility of an idea was the one I enjoyed the most. It's quite comprehensive and leads you step-by-step into the topic, complete with graphs, charts, and tables to help you visualize the content.
Curiously, the author encourages us to share our ideas and not be afraid of others rejecting or stealing our ideas. How will that benefit us? We overcome our fears, get feedback on our ideas, and bring it closer to fruition.
The last few chapters are focused on helping the reader convert the learnings of the book into reality.
Your Next Idea is not meant to be read in one sitting nor is it meant to be read once and put away. It's more of a working guide that you refer to from time to time. The author uses simple language, a positive tone, and plenty of practical exercises to guide us through the concepts in the book.
If you're looking for help with coming up with fresh ideas for just about anything, this book will be quite useful.
My reviews are for readers. I attempt to write balanced reviews to help people decide if they'd like to pick up the book. I also post reviews to Amazon India, Goodreads, and my blog: www.satabdimukherjee.wordpress.com.
