Synopsis

Are you where you thought you’d be at this stage of your life? No? Then this book is for you. “You Are Not Here” explores the timeless concept that life’s journey is its own reward. This collection of stories, reflections, and inspirations, partly autobiographical and inspired by the beloved poem Ithaka, is for those who have not yet arrived. It is an invitation to discover the beauty in the struggle, find hope in the quest, and embrace growth as you move forward on your own life’s journey. Written by Michael Albanese and beautifully illustrated by JJ Richards, this book is a love letter to dreamers. It offers an approachable and encouraging reminder that, wherever you are on this adventure called life, you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

You Are Not Here shares a collection of short stories that explore the journey of life, the challenges we face as humans, and the choices they present. From being ground down like coffee, aggressive basketball, and the wonders of Bob Dylan’s poetry, there are a range of stories that address uncertainty, choices, challenge, and what it means to really live.

Michael Albanese helps us look at life not as a singular destination, goal, or even trajectory but as a series of experiences that might change abruptly. Each experience is an important part of the journey, and disappointment or sudden changes, despite being disappointing, lead to new wonders or experiences.

While some might emphasize achievements, results, or successes, this book shows us that life itself is the journey, and each step takes us to exactly where we are meant to be. We can choose, at any one time, how to review our lives, how to make positive and even uncomfortable decisions, and how to treat ourselves with compassion along the way.

You Are Not Here arrived for me at a time of frustration and even disappointment and helped me to change my focus, not on what I had wanted to become but on who I am and the wonderful people who surround me. The journey may be different from what I had imagined or planned, but by trusting (and even acknowledging) that I am exactly where I should be, I began to feel, over the pages, a very deep gratitude for a life I had been, in some ways, frustrated with.

The topic of the journey over the destination isn’t new, and the author explains this at the outset, but the joy, vitality, vibrancy, and love of life make this journey unique. The stories are humble, humorous, and engaging, and they reawaken the spiritual journey we take as humans, the value we have, and the choices we make, in every moment, to live our best lives.

For anyone in a space of uncertainty who has tried and struggled or who believes that doors just continue to close, this book is an incredible read.

I am an avid reader and am currently working on my own book. I enjoy indie or off beat books with interesting perspectives on society, social norms, and spirituality. I’m also a big fan of puzzles and psychological thrillers.

You Are Not Here

Do you remembershopping malls?

Before Covid. And the internet. When we could drive ourselves to the then coolest place to hang out with friends.

Inside the mall was a large map on each floor with a diagram of the retailers and restaurants. On the map was an X followed by the words:

YOU ARE HERE

It is reassuring to know where you are.

But for me, I was directionally challenged, so this map could have been more helpful. I never knew where here was, so I would wander around the mall until I arrived at my destination.

Now I wonder:

What if we were standing in front of a map of our life?

Our maps would look different, as each life journey is entirely unique, but they are all used similarly: to navigate and symbolize.

What would your map look like?

Mine would chart my life's zigzagged routes and accidental (or divine) pinpoints. It would include all the missteps, misdirection, and mistakes and likely reveal the uncertain, circuitous course I have taken to get to… today.

For some of us who thought we would have arrived by now, we may see a big X in the middle of our life map with the words:

YOU ARE NOT HERE

What do you mean? What happened?

I thought I would be there by now.

Well, the map says otherwise. The route was confusing.

The directions were unclear. The compass broke.

We got lost along the way. We ran out of gas.

Our engine quit.

The boat sank.

We go from wanderlust to wondering… will we ever get there?

Does it even matter now?

If you look closely, under the big X of your life map and the bold reminder that you are not here, there are encouraging words that are often hard to believe…

… you are exactly where you are supposed to be.
