You learn a lot about 1965 Swaziland in this entertaining contemporary fiction/mystery book.
Eating and reading at the same time is wonderful.
I absolutely adored this book! I discovered it through my local library and immediately bought a copy for my friend. I marked my favorite parts and gave the book to my friend for her birthday. She loved it too. We both highly recommend it.
When The Ground Is Hard by Malla Nunn is a heartwarming book about the struggles of two teenage girls. It tells the tales of schoolyard revenge and an unexpected friendship. It talks about the trials of going to school and having teachers one doesn't necessarily enjoy. Even if you can't relate to anything else in the book, I'm sure many can relate to that. This book made me laugh and cry and fall in love with reading all over again.
I know violence doesn't solve anything, except it does.
I loved learning about 1965 Swaziland. I loved hearing about the culture, the nature, and the school the main character, Adele, goes to. Adele goes to Keziah Christian Academy which her wealthy white father pays for. When she is suddenly abandoned by her best friend Deliah, Adele is forced to room with the outcast Lottie. Adele and Lottie don't get along at first but soon bond over their love of reading. Although they come from very different lifestyles Lottie and Adele work together to find their friend when he goes missing.
Being good for the sake of appearances is the same as a lie.
There are so many amazing quotes that have become favorites of mine and lessons I learned. The theme of "Don't judge a book by its cover" is prevalent throughout the book. Every moment of this book is wonderful and deserves to be shared with the world.
We Sing the light into being.
If you choose to read this book, and you should choose to read it, beware. This book totally spoiled Jane Eyre for me.
I have always loved reading and I am currently falling in love with it all over again. I not only love to read, but I love to analyze texts to find what works and what doesn't.
