Beautifully illustrated, this shows children they can achieve their dreams even when they might seem to be as big as becoming a surgeon.
WHEN I’M A SURGEON instils a belief in children that they can achieve greatness, fulfilling their dreams and potential. Once children have a vision and believe in their goals - anything is possible. This delightful book highlights the many opportunities a surgical career offers beyond the traditional perceptions of this role.
“Being a surgeon has allowed me to develop skills beyond my expectations. My dream is to have more young women believe that they too can become surgeons.” Dr Samantha Pillay
“Dreaming is believing” is so true and reminds me of some of the more momentous occasions in my life when I thought: “You sure dream big girl!”
And this is what this little book is intended to do – to make some little girl (or boy for that matter) dream of becoming a surgeon, and believe in their dream enough to make it come true. The author is herself a surgeon who went through a difficult childhood but fulfilled her own dream of becoming a doctor. She dedicates the book to children everywhere, with the words “Dream big, aim high”. One couldn’t give any child a better start than that.
Accompanied by delightful illustrations, the books explains in easy, simple language that a doctor can make people better, and will even be able to work with robots, travel the world, heal others, help their communities, teach and indeed do almost anything you wish to. A doctor can even run a business or become an inspirational leader.
Many people say they developed their life’s ambition at a young age, often because of a person they were influenced by, or because they read about something that inspired them. Perhaps this will inspire some young person and give them a dream of one day becoming a surgeon, or perhaps become what the book also suggests a surgeon could do – simply become “a wonderful mother”.
Lots of ideas run through these pages, not least of which is the idea that you could write children’s books, which is exactly what Samantha Pillay is doing, obviously with enjoyment and a lot of thought as to what might inspire kids everywhere. It also reflects her own varied experience of so many aspects of life from good nutrition to inspiring young kids.
