Hot and terrifying! These two qualities somehow go together spetacularily in this book, with an ending you wouldn't predict!
Zoey Sheffield never understood the appeal of the unknown.
She knows what she likes. She’s a blunt woman. A woman who craves control. She doesn’t need love—the mere idea of romance is detestable and she does not need a man to stand by her side. She would much rather have their company in bed…or in a car…or in an alleyway…the location isn’t relevant, really. What’s important is that she could happily and promptly bid them adieu after they served their purpose and then, she could move on to the next one. The world that she’s been thrust into, however, is one where that thought seems utterly impossible.
It's all because of the stupid men.
The men have made Zoey’s life more complicated than she wished it to be, and she struggles to hold onto the reins to her own reality. However, there is more for Zoey that lurks in the shadows. The threat crouches in the distance, hides around corners, and awaits the most imperfect opportunity to present itself. It’s ready to snatch the reins from Zoey’s hands altogether.
And the uncomfortable unknown that she’s forever attempted to avoid is now a darkness that threatens to drown her completely.
Veiled in Brick showcases free-spirited Zoey and the utter turmoil that encompasses her when she is torn between two love interests with a stalker thrown into the mix. While the question of who Zoey will decide to give her heart to may seem evident, how she and her friends will be able to catch her culprit is far from.
I feel the need to address first and foremost - I strongly recommend reading the first book, Thinly Veiled, beforehand as there is key character development happening there. Having the backstory on the extent of Zoey and Liam's friendship will help readers empathize with her character. Anyone who has similar character traits to Zoey - a no filter, no "BS", individualist - will feel very close to her.
I was far more invested in Zoey's story than Claire's in Thinly Veiled. The very first paragraphs of the book were written beautifully, and the eloquence stayed consistent throughout. The words tickled my brain with every turn of the page. A very honourable mention is deserved in reference to the steamier scenes as well. Modiste is quickly becoming a most respected author in that category in my notes. There's no tiptoeing around any subject matter of the sort, which I love. She knows how to leave a reader flushed and breathy.
This story was grand, all the way through to the ending. You can really feel the urgency, anxiety, fear, and even love, throughout Zoey's chaotic journey. She's aching to sort her feelings, with an overshadowing desperation to be free from the metaphorical cage her stalker has entrapped her; one that is becoming smaller and smaller with each passing day. Modiste uses many twists and turns to keep readers engaged in how Zoey and her friends (with surprisingly little help from authorities) will be able to manage - and survive - solving this mystery. I'll use my own reaction in stating, the ending may have you jaw-dropped and saying, "Holy f*ck."
