A haunting tale of betrayal, survival, and resilience set in a grim world where desperate choices come at devastating costs.
This is a captivating entry into a world of desperation where things go badly wrong. The protagonist wakes up to find their body ravaged by cancer, the result of a deceitful deal that promised hope but delivered suffering. The story reveals through the exchange with Brian, a gruff yet caring ally, a bleak landscape where the powerful manipulate the vulnerable without consequence.
Raw, evocative descriptions are superb in writing. The emaciated figure of the protagonist—hollow, pale, and hollow-eyed, with hair that straggles around her face—is a haunting portrayal of what she went through. Brian's tough-love pragmatism brings depth; he is at once the voice of reason and reluctant comfort. Exasperation has been well-balanced with an honest wish to see the protagonist live another day, to avoid more mistakes in the future.
The world-building is subtle but effective in the narrative. Terms such as "Sickos" and "Inquisitors" give a hint of the dystopian society governed by exploitation and corruption, whereas "the Boroughs" is a grim reminder of the divide between the mighty and the weak. A layered world that invites curiosity is created without overwhelming the reader with exposition.
However, the excerpt lacks some things. The internal journey of the protagonist—shock to resolve feels a bit rushed. Spent more time on this internal turmoil, and maybe the recovery will be greater, and so will be their resolve to move on. The lack of any immediate context, such as details about the deal or the broader mechanics of this world, might leave readers a bit disoriented at first.
What struck me most was the story’s emotional resonance. It captures the weight of desperation and betrayal while leaving room for hope and resilience. Brian’s mixture of cynicism and care provides an engaging dynamic, grounding the story in relatable human connections.
I would recommend this work to readers who enjoy dystopian fiction with complex characters and moral ambiguity. It offers a powerful exploration of survival and the consequences of risky choices, though it may frustrate those looking for a more straightforward or fast-paced narrative. The story lingers in the mind, prompting reflection on what one is willing to sacrifice and the cost of living in a world where survival often comes at too high a price.
