Synopsis
Thirty trillion miles from Earth, plying the gulf between our solar system and the new human cities on the planet Prosperity, the colony ship Transcendent suffers a disaster that disables its engines and kills every member of its crew—all except one.
Panicked, medic Troy Hartman finds his approaching certain death vying with the sheer will to survive as he scrambles to revive the drifting ship. With the help of OTTO, the ship’s AI, Troy sets out to repair the damage, hotwire the engines, and establish communication with anyone out in the dark and forbidding void.
And as all hope seems to be fading, a mysterious lifeline appears—a signal from an unknown source, prompting Troy to redouble his last-ditch effort at making contact and changing course. Especially when he realizes that he may not be the last living human on board, after all.
The brilliantly written book Transcendent by Jay Antani examines difficult subjects like identity, belonging, and the pursuit of purpose in life. Prashant, a young child who is having a hard time understanding who he is and where he fits in the world, is the main character of the novel. Readers are brought along for the trip as he sets out on a voyage of self-discovery through India's lush jungles, sharing in his successes and failures.
Antani writes masterfully, conjuring us a world that is both engrossing and stimulating. Each character is intricately crafted and complex, with unique conflicts and motivations that give the story depth and complexity. The reader is transported to a different planet and a different time by Antani's vivid descriptions of the Indian landscape.Taking people into Prashant's narrative.
The investigation of identity in Transcendent is one of its most potent features. Half-American, half-Indian Prashant feels like he doesn't quite belong anyplace. He starts to investigate his Indian ancestry and wrestle with what it means to be both Indian and American as he travels through India with his mother. Readers are encouraged to reflect on what it means to be a part of a culture or community by Antani's subtle and thought-provoking treatment of this theme.
The quest for life's purpose is another recurring topic in Transcendent. Prashant is looking for something, but he's not exactly sure what. He meets a range of people who are looking for various things as he travels through India.something, whether it be enlightenment on a spiritual level, a sense of direction, or just a place to fit in. The treatment of this theme by Antani is profound and poignant, embracing the difficulties of the quest for meaning.
Overall, Transcendent is a superb book that readers will think about long after they flip the last page. Anyone who enjoys literature that challenges and inspires must read this book because of Antani's writing, which is both compelling and thought-provoking. Highly suggested.
