The Wild Robot is about so much more than what meets the eye! Roz is instantly lovable with her innocence and her fascination of learning! Roz grows up before our very eyes, in such a short amount of time. She teaches us so much about resilience, kindness and compassion, even though she doesn't breathe or have a heart that beats!
Roz finds herself as the lone surviving robot of a shipment tossed about by the sea. She lands on an island, where she learns to co-exist with nature and the animals that inhabit the land. Though Roz is constantly learning from the animals and adapting, we quickly see how Roz is really the one teaching lessons to the animals! When Roz becomes a caretaker, we see a shift and an instinct that kicks in. But can instincts really exist in a mechanical body?
The Wild Robot is purely an adventure, with so many laugh out loud moments. At the same time, we see the circle of life, and how nature survives, and sadly, even how it occasionally doesn't survive. Roz's adventure definitely takes a turn and becomes a battle of staying on the island with the families who have come to love her, or leaving and keeping them safe from those who seek to "rescue Roz" from her island.
The characters in The Wild Robot are full of life and so very representative of the real life animals in our world. Roz befriends a sweet little squirrel, learns to work with the Beavers, discovers issues and solves problems with a grump Pike fish, and learns to co-exist right along aide a family of bears.
The Wild Robot will undoubtedly become a classic the is a perfect read for elementary and junior high students. It's also a great read-a-loud for the littles, and a reminder to all the adults in the world to love their neighbor!
