Not for me 😔

I have the feeling that I have misunderstood this book. It had potential but it wasn't for me.

A small (mini) novel of mixed mix elements. Such as: crime, mystery, love and tension.

One newspaper ad lures him out of a big city to the countryside. While his heart is free. He has no idea what will happen in the countryside. Joe, nowhere does know where corner love is waiting for him. But that's the way it is in life, you have to fight for love. Even if one crazy, sick, mentally disturbed, opponent (woman) is also interested in Joe. The opponent (woman) becomes a difficult opponent. She is a mother of a daughter (Lena). She as a mother is able to stand between their path and make them hell on earth. She is also able to mix with everything and do different intrigues. What made me pick up this book when I first found it in my feed was that it looked like it was going to be a short, fresh novella. One of those you squeeze between big books and that feels like a breath of fresh air. The synopsis looked interesting, light and engaging.

Unfortunately, this book ended up not being my cup of tea, although I know it is a matter of likings and dislikings, I would have liked it to be more.

The main character is nicely built, you can easily identify with him and he is so easy to like. But the other characters I've felt like a bit shallow. Jenna and the mother, namely. I would have felt more engaged in the story if I had seen a character construction for Jenna the same way I saw for Joe. It felt unbalanced, for me.

The plot is a little simple, but it is true that these types of stories do not need a very elaborated and convoluted plot and subplots. Nevertheless, it didn't feel engaging enough for me.

The writing style is not bad, some parts are better than others, but it is simple and easy to read. Adding this to the shortness of the book, I am sure any reader can finish it in a matter of a day, which serves the purpose I mentioned at the beginning.

To sum it all up, it is not a book I would not recommend, but it was a forgettable read for me. A nice pause and intermediate book between other heavier ones, but nothing more (and nothing less). I would like to read more from this author, though, I believe it has potential and maybe in the future his stories engage me way more than this one did. I expect so!

Who am I?

Let me introduce myself: I’m Joe-Joe. Yes, my parents thought it would be a good idea to give me that name. But it has been several years now since I left home; I have become just Joe. I live in London, alone. I’m sitting in a cafe as I write this, a newspaper next to me, drinking a milky cup of tea. I used to be shocked by how much tea costs here, but not any more. I like it, so I buy it whatever the price. Besides, I have enough money. I work several jobs at once: manager of a bookstore, journalist, architect. I can’t have any complaints about how my life has turned out; I’m happy. I couldn’t stand it at home, so I rolled up my sleeves and went after my dreams. And then my life changed at my sister Lucy’s wedding. It was there that I met her friend Lena. Our eyes met across the room ‒ but she was not the only one looking at me. Her mother was eyeing me up too. I haven’t seen Lucy since her wedding day, but I am going to see her today: we are going back to the home in the countryside where we spent our childhood and adolescence. I found a house for sale there: I might even buy it, who knows. I have asked for time off work. It’s ironic: the village used to be the last place I would ever think of going on a day off. I have a car, an s650 convertible. I’m in love with her ‒ I call her the Super Bowl. She might not be the most expensive car in the world, but I don’t care what cars rich people drive. And she wasn’t cheap: I worked hard to buy her, and I’m proud that I could afford her.
