When parents expect or welcome their first child into the world, they often adopt a pet so their "kids" can grow up together. While many people choose cats as their family pet, millions of homes have a dog as a family member. The family in this humorous children's book focuses on a canine's feelings regarding four children he shares a home with. The pup believes "the grown-ups are okay," but the kids are "insane."
As the story plays out, Dog explains his stance on the kids. He remarks on how loud they are and can't figure out why they can shriek, yet he's not allowed to bark. He complains about the mess they leave behind, their super strong and tight hugs, and how they are a little rough with his fur. On the flip side, Dog lists the kids' positive attributes. The wrinkly canine loves it when the kiddos scratch his head and rub his belly.
The Trouble with Children (According to Dog) stands out from other children's books for many reasons. I loved how daily living with kids was seen through the eyes of the family pet. The text and illustrations were comical, especially the dress-up scene. The antics and behavior of the four small children are something parents have witnessed a time or two in their own homes. While the destroyed kitchen would not make adults laugh in real life, it will cause readers of all ages to chuckle.
As each scene plays out, we watch the bond between children and their furry friend grow. Stick around after Dog confesses that the kids have good qualities for a section offering tips on How to Safely & Lovingly Interact with Your Dog." Ask your child(ren) or class if there is anything they'd add to the list.
I recommend this comedic storybook to children 3-8 years of age.
