An introduction to Triceratops (a kind of dinosaur) in hilarious, comic form, for second and third graders (ages 7-9)
James and his friends Pick, Shovel, and his dog, Diggy, are off again to find fossils for Show and Tell. During their last adventure, they faced a rather 'bone-headed' adversary, but surely this time it will be an easy excavation...
Our die-hard dino buff is back for another adventure, thanks to his paleontologist mom, Mommypenny! Along with his friends, our young archaeologist finds himself digging through the layers of the earth and ice on the hunt for a larger-than-life discovery! Under the watchful (or napping) eyes of Dr. Archie Ologist, our explorers navigate the icy terrain of the frozen, wintry Dakota landscape – and there are TREMENDOUS TWISTS IN THE TREK FOR TRICERATOPS ahead!
No matter what stands in their way, these kids know that the key to success is to 'tri, tri again'!
Did you know Triceratops is a kind of three-horned prehistoric dinosaur that went extinct about 65 million years ago? That they are one of the last dinosaur species to vanish from Earth? And we find their fossils in the USA? The Tremendous Triceratops Trek by Carole Marsh is an educational book for 2nd and 3rd grades (kids aged 7-9) that seeks to introduce these extinct giants to kids in hilarious, comic form.
I reviewed this graphic novel from various standpoints, keeping in mind that it’s an educational book (and not one merely for fun!), and share below the pros and cons from what I discovered.
Pros: The names used, like James, Pick, Shovel, and Diggy (“the four”) are lovely. I believe American kids will easily relate to/love them. The environment depicted that contains drones, toboggans, Boneapart, a bone-headed villain, s’mores, etc. is most modern, and that’s good too. The fight between Boneapart and the four near the end adds just the right suspense/thrill to the book before we reach the celebratory triumphal end page.
Cons: There’s an overuse of humor, mostly as puns (e.g. Dr. Archie Ologist, guyths, yougths, can-nut, etc.) in the book. Of course, a book for kids aged 7-9 needs lots of humor to be light, lively, and humorous but a bit too much has been used: it takes the focus off the main topic and is often like “noise,” that overcrowds one's mind and disturbs your concentration. Next, some pics relating to one important male character depict him as a woman. Due to this, I fear that kids may misconstrue him as two different people. Finally, and particularly because it’s an introductory book on science, I think the focus on Triceratops, the subject, could be improved — selective suppression of the “noise” I mentioned above may be necessary to achieve this.
To sum up, it’s a good book in the making but as it is, needs rework/to be improved upon.
