"The Tale of The Little Black Cloud" offers young readers a safe space to explore difficult emotions, while reminding them that brighter skies are always possible. It's more than just a story—it's a comforting friend on cloudy days, helping children find their way through stormy feelings to clearer emotional weather.
Heavy emotions can weigh us down. The longer we hold them in, the more sad, lonely, and depressed we become. Our inner light dims, and darkness descends on us like a dark storm cloud featured in The Tale of The Little Black Cloud. In this emotion-packed picture book, a literal cloud is weighed down by their negative thoughts and feelings, causing it to descend from the sky and land on the ground with thump. A duck wearing red rain boots sat beside the dark cloud and asked it what’s wrong. The cloud didn’t speak a word; instead, it began to cry.
Crying can be cathartic. It allows us to process difficult moments in our lives. It can provide relief to a troubled mind and lift spirits. It can ease physical pain. It can be a cry for help and create bonds. We never did learn what was troubling the dark cloud's mind, but the story's point was to promote compassion and be the shoulder or ear for someone in need. It also establishes the importance of sharing your feelings instead of locking them inside. I agree with the author when they said sharing what's burdening you will make you "lighter." Most of all, it informs readers that, like the cloud in the picture book, you are not alone.
The Tale of The Little Black Cloud illustrations were simple but powerful. The duck and cloud's facial expressions speak volumes. I enjoyed watching the duck comfort the cloud, being the friend, it needed. The Tale of The Little Black Cloud offers young readers a safe space to explore difficult emotions while reminding them that brighter skies are always possible. I recommend sharing this touching story with children three years and older. Hopefully this sweet, rhyming picture book will encourage your youngster to share their feelings with a family member, licensed therapist, educator, or friend.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
