Carol Marsh (Author) and Lee Barrow (Illustrator) did a remarkable job, and we can't wait to read more by them!
The Tyrannosaurus Rex is the biggest dinosaur in history, which makes you wonder what business James, Shovel, Pick, and Diggy have messing with it? In this larger-than-life paleo-adventure, passports are required, and pack your summer clothes for a tropical trek through time in… Canada?
Even with the help of Scotty the dino, this romp will be nothing short of a dino-sized feat for James and his friends to overcome. Dastardly Bonefinger won’t miss the chance to claw the gang's plan to shreds.
In true fashion, Mommypenny’s surprises help to save the day, but watch out – there’s an asteroid headed their way!
Do James, Shovel, Pick, and Diggy make it back in time for Show and Tell? Will they return in another fossil-finding mission? You’ll have to keep reading to find out in this exciting page-turner!
I'm not sure how many children in the recommended reading group (7-10 years) know of this pop culture (spoof) reference, so the header (James Bones 007 Years Old Licensed to Dig) must be directed towards the parents. I'm not ashamed to admit that if I saw this in a comic book store, I'd pick it up even if I didn't have a child. I'm a sucker for unique graphic novels!
The Roaring Tyrannosaurus Rex Romp is listed as book three in the series, so I wasn't familiar with the characters' names in the letter from Mommpenny and which name belonged to which friend. However, that didn't hinder the connection to the storyline much. I may not have known who was diving into the trap door portal to the past, but I was eager to see where the journey took him and the others.
The group met ravenous crocodiles and a friendly T-rex named Scotty almost immediately. The reactions of the tiny pink and green dinosaurs to Scotty were funny, but the spotted puppy really stole the show when he flopped on his back and said, "I surrender." That made my daughter and me laugh hard.
During their talk with Scotty, we were introduced to the Audacious era. We were not familiar with this period, so we embarked on an online search. There was one mention of an 'Audacious' New Species of Horned Dinosaur Discovered in Montana, but nothing more. My daughter asked if the author made it up; I just shrugged. I had no idea but told her we'd go to the library and see if they knew anything more about the "Audacious era."
The Roaring Tyrannosaurus Rex Romp: James Bone Graphic Novel #3 by Carol Marsh had a lot of humorous text and artwork. We laughed at the croc's joke about "fast food." We couldn't help but chuckle every time Scotty, the yellow T-rex, broke out in tears. We joked around that the kids need an umbrella if they continue hanging out with him. The way the kids traveled in the past was also hilarious. There's so much happening in the graphic novel that I encourage you to read it more than once. We did and found new things to love and laugh over.

I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
