A young woman is unknowingly saved by two aliens, and the trio form a close bond.
The Perfect Ruby is the second instalment in the The Coalition Universe series by E.K. Darnell; however, it can act as a standalone.
The Perfect Ruby is a polyamorous science fiction romance. It follows Ruby, the FMC, after she is kidnapped and held captive by a politician who brainwashes her into thinking that her sole purpose is to serve others. Ruby, considered important cargo, is picked up by Ozun, Tral and their fellow crewmates, and they embark on a journey together. Ozun and his lover, Tral, take an interest in Ruby and realise they enjoy her company more than they initially let on.
I liked how complex Ruby is as our female main character. She willingly enjoys being a sex worker, feeling like she has control over her life for once until she is kidnapped and forced to serve a demanding and cruel politician. Ruby is actually a shifter, but she chooses to disguise herself as a human to appeal more interesting. Initially, she is timid and subservient, but as the book progresses, she opens up to Ozun and Tral.
Ozun and Tral, our male main characters, are lovely. Ozun is the captain of the ship they inhabit, and Tral acts as his right-hand man. Both men are in a committed relationship, but their chemistry with Ruby is palpable. Ruby becomes a member of the crew, and the three become closer.
The book is only 255 pages long, therefore a relatively quick and easy read. The pacing is good and the action is enjoyable. The smut scenes don't feel forced or misplaced, and they are well-written. I haven't read the first book in this series, but I would be interested in picking it up in the near future, as I really enjoyed The Perfect Ruby.
