An adorable story you will want to read with your own little "monster."
A hungry and bored little boy gets into all kinds of mischief, blaming it on a make-believe monster in this laugh-out-loud-funny rhyming story.
The Monster Did It is a story about a little “monster” who gets himself into all kinds of trouble. He runs from one room to the next, leaving havoc and messes in his wake. From throwing toys around (and even one toy into the toilet), eating candy he knows he shouldn’t have, coloring all over the walls, doors, windows, and stairs, and ultimately knocking over a vase, the little monster causes all sorts of chaos. When he finally hurts himself from a tumble down the stairs, the monster’s angry, red face disappears and is replaced with the wailing face of a little boy who cries out for his mommy, claiming the monster was responsible for everything.
This children’s book was short and cute, with fun rhyming lines that flowed from one page to the next and adorable illustrations that depicted the monster’s rampage. I think children would really enjoy the nursery rhyme feel of The Monster Did It, and might beg their parents to read it again and again.
The only thing I thought could be improved upon in this short book was its lack of a lesson. At the end of the story, the mom looks around the room and can’t find a monster to take the blame. She then patches up her child’s boo-boo, fixes him dinner, and rumples his head, saying, “Eat up, little monster.” While some children might enjoy the monster’s chaos and leave it at that, other children might hear the story and decide to mimic the little boy, blaming all of their naughty endeavors on a fictitious monster. If the mother had sat the boy down and explained the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and not blaming it on others, a great lesson could have been taught to kids reading the book.
Overall, this was a cute, short story that I think will be widely enjoyed by children.
