A fun tale of two sisters which both happen to be witches in training; one definitely better at it than the other!
What if the witch trials of Salem in early 1692 America sent many witches deep into the unfamiliar forests of the country to survive? What if, over 150 years later, in the middle 1800s, there are places where the Magical are accepted by most Ordinaries and live happily now? It is happening in Ricochet Forest, Crows Canyon, and Ricochet Rose Crossing. This is a story of two witch sisters living in their own cabins in the forest, behind their parents’ house, while honing their magic skills in the middle 1800s. The eldest is quite good with her classroom magic while the youngest has many mishaps on the road to learning the art of magic.
In this, Book One, Sparkleful gets an owl, a Pairing, also known as a Familiar, and her younger sister, Marvelouz, immediately wants one too. She rushes off, and in spite of a couple of mishaps, she gets what she wants and learns a valuable lesson doing so. Marvelouz is a free spirit. She never thinks of giving up, she just concentrates on the path ahead and barrels forward. This is only the beginning of their story.
The Mishaps of Marvelouz Witch written by Ricochet Forest is a cute story of two witches who are very different but going toward a common goal; to be a good, successful witch.
This story has a great plot line and wonderful characters however the reader doesn't get the chance to really get to know the characters as they are constantly moving from one situation to the next. There are multiple layers to the plot and many directions this story could go, should the author want to expand. Readership is hard to determine since the situations bounce back and forth between simplistic activities like looking for herbs and the more complex necessities of flying on a broom. Another difficulty in reading the story is that a lot of general information is laid out without explanation, making it difficult for a younger reader to implicitly understand.
One thing I think would work very well for this story would be to break the activities into their own chapters, so each activity or ritual could be thoroughly explained. With a more in-depth explanation I believe this story could keep readers engaged.
Overall, the ideas presented in this story are great for teaching lessons to kids, for allowing kids to see that anyone can rise to, and for pure enjoyment. I would have loved to learn more about "pairings" as well as some of the things the girls learned in school and at hone.

I have worked in accounting for over 30 years but my real passion is much more artistic. I love to paint, create things with my hands and write stories. Especially stories with magic and fantasy. My little dogs are my life and my joy and we share a country life together. view profile
