Readers will think twice about making any "too good to be true" deals after they witness the punishment John received for breaking his word!
A down on his luck man has a tough decision to make. Does he take an offer to make him rich, or does he give it up to do a good thing?
Comics books, like every other genre, design covers to catch a reader's eye. One glance at The Deal, I knew I had to read this comic. You could practically hear the chicken squawking in fright. I also wondered why the old gentleman, wearing shabby clothes and worn-out boots, was on the run with the chicken clutched closely to his chest. Everything about the cover (font, colors, and image sections) complimented each other beautifully and piqued my interest.
Victor Fames appeared in front of John as he was eating his dinner. The mysterious man mentioned he and John had met in Jackson in '09, which was not elaborated on except for John being adamant that he wants nothing to do with folks from there. He claimed he was wrongfully accused of stealing and was almost hung for the deed. Victor Fames reassures John he believes him and offers him a deal: He'll share information about where to find the Source, which will lead John to a pile of pure gold, and in return, John must split the loot 50/50.
You probably heard the saying if something is too good to be true, then it probably is. Well, desperation will cause people to make poor choices, and so will the potential of easy money. They might ignore warning bells. John falls into this category. His travels to the Source were paved with painful obstacles, but John powered through because the reward was too tempting money. He probably would do (almost) anything for free cash!
Greed can and will change people, especially if they've never had any money, and suddenly come into a hefty amount. John was dirt poor, so any cash that came his way would affect him. It was not shocking he'd became possessive over a trunk of gold. What was surprising was the consequences that befell John.
Even though I enjoyed this comic very much, I was a bit bummed we didn't witness the abduction of the chicken. We did, however, watch John devour his stolen bird.
Have you ever thought about what you would do if given the chance to be rich? Would you tempt fate like John? John realized the hard way that your word is your bond, and there are repercussions for breaking it. No doubt he'll think twice about making any future deals if the occasion arises.
I recommend this comic to teens and adults.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
