Cody's story encourages children to treat others with kindness and fairness and not to judge others by their appearance.
"None of my friends like to sing," Cody said. "And all the other animals made fun..."
"But that doesn't make sense," Becky chimed. "Singing is for everyone!"
Cody is a very peculiar crocodile. He doesn't want to laze around and sleep all day like all of his friends do. In fact, Cody has big dreams. He wants to sing! But nobody wants to sing with him. They laugh and tell him that that's just not what crocodiles do. Maybe they're right. Maybe crocodiles aren't meant to sing...but an unlikely friend helps him find his voice.
The Crocodile Choir is a heartwarming story that celebrates the courage to be true to oneself and the power of friendship. Through whimsical illustrations and charming rhymes, children will learn valuable lessons about love, perseverance, and accepting who you are.
Perfect for bedtime reading or story time, The Crocodile Choir is sure to inspire young readers to sing their own song, no matter what others may say.
In the jungles of Africa, by the deep river Nile, lived a very curious crocodile named Cody. Cody resembled the other crocodiles, but that's where the similarities ended. His friends loved to float in the water and take long naps in the sun. Cody didn't. Cody wanted to sing! Since the other crocodiles had no interest in making music, Cody went on an adventure to find musically inclined animals.
On his journey, Cody met a pretty bird who sang so beautifully. This made Cody's heart swell with glee. He wanted to be their friend, play with them, and create music together, but there was one big problem: Becky (the bird) was scared of him. Why? Cause crocodiles don't play with their food! As Cody continued on his mission to find musical friends, he faced other animals who also judged him for how he looked, not who he was on the inside. Their laughter broke a small croc's heart. His crocodile tears will break your heart, too.
Every day, people are judged for the color of their skin or where they come from. They are told what they can't do and often feel unworthy, unliked, and hopeless. The negativity takes a massive toll on their mental health. Cody is a crocodile, but he was judged unfairly by his peers. Sometimes, people realize the error of their ways and ask for forgiveness. That is exactly what happened here.
We should prompt our kids to treat others with kindness. In doing so, we create adults who show compassion, are accepting of others, and make a harmonious world. I adored watching the different animals come together to make music. I loved the creative use of musical notes in the book's title, but at first glance, beginning readers might stumble on "O," "I," and "C." The letter-infused musical notes do not carry over into the story, so there will be no confusion there. There was one more design issue. The author wrote Cody had big crocodile teeth. His teeth do not resemble a real crocodile's chompers. If kids or adults expect to see a row of white teeth, they'll be disappointed. Cody DID look cute in his red baseball cap, though. All the animals were pretty darling. Oh, and I loved how the design team took careful measures to ensure the colorful images did not overpower the text. That'll prove beneficial to solo readers!
I recommend sharing this beautiful story with your preschool and grade schoolers.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
