An endearing story about finding your place in the world, whether it's in heaven or on earth!
Betty didn’t think she was well suited for Angel Training Camp, but after contemplating her tiny angel wings while eating perfect chocolate chip cookies, she heard sobbing, so investigated. Thus began an adventure in helping another soul weather the COVID Pandemic, leading to Betty’s own understanding of her angelic role.
Betty, a guardian angel in training, struggles to find her way in Angel Training Camp. A bit different from all the others, Betty strives to succeed, even though she's not quite like the athletic Archangel Michael or her trainee peers. After a hilarious set of accidents, Betty meets a new friend who's just as frustrated by the world as she is. Together, Betty and her friend help each other learn to navigate the ins and outs of the earthly and heavenly realms. And at the end of the day, both girls discover new ways of helping others, and themselves, even when the world feels totally out of control.
The Chunkiest Angel is a charming story, and offers many relatable characters and situations. Betty, who has a different build and personality than the other angels, has trouble fitting in at training camp. I personally hesitate to call her "chunky", her build reminding me more of the classic 1940s Wonder Woman than someone truly overweight. However, Betty's struggle to find her way, even though she's a little different than her friends, is something many of us can relate to very well. Additionally, this story shows many ways to adapt to the new world of COVID shutdowns, something all of us can identify with. This book's sweet message and engagingly beautiful art are a combination sure to delight the reader. While a few themes are a little existential for younger readers, such as the concept of "earth angel", the overall tale of a misfit guardian angel discovering her place in the world, and God's perfect plan for her, is a lighthearted story certain to warm your heart.
Perfect for reading with children from about 3 to 9, especially those struggling with the "new normal" of a post-COVID world, The Chunkiest Angel is a tale about love, acceptance, overcoming obstacles, and discovering your own unique talents. With lovely art and a steady-paced, gentle narrative, this engaging story is sure to be a new family favorite in a chaotic world.

Jennifer Maksimovich has been enticed by spooky stories from a young age, having listened to Mystery Theater radio with her Baba. Growing up in the mining town of Butte, MT also influenced ghostly atmosphere and storytelling traditions, both real and really embellished, which most good stories are! view profile
