Alice is back, sharing an encounter centering around a solitary bee.
From the very first page, Alice is captivated by the bumble bee resting on the pink flower's pistil. She watches it collect pollen and nectar before flying to its next destination: another pink flower. As the bee buzzes around, Alice follows close by, her fascination never wavering. Her observation led her to note the insect is covered in "fuzz-y." She watches it crawl across a daisy and fall off another flower in a puddle. This blundering act might elicit a smile or chuckle from young listeners.
As the bee struggles in the water, smiles will turn upside down with concern for the poor insect's safety. How will he navigate out of the puddle? The scenario could prompt a question regarding whether the reader would help a bee in trouble. Why or why not? Is there any insect or bug they would or would not help?
The synopsis states, "As Alice navigates through challenges and explores the world of insects, readers will discover fascinating facts about bumblebees, their importance in our ecosystem, and how each creature plays a unique role in maintaining the delicate balance of nature." Besides the "fuzz-y," it does not offer anything pertaining the statement made in its summary. To meet this requirement, the author would have to extend the story and add valuable information, provide links for readers to see more details, or adults would have to supply the science facts. Unfortunately, my score must reflect how the contents don't match the synopsis. However, with a revision to the summary, The Bumbling Bumblebee could easily be five stars!
The story is short and sweet, ideal for toddlers and preschoolers or beginning readers. It shows kids there's beauty in everything, including a buzzing bee.
