First of a series, this is the story of Mat, a young Canadian man with a severe case of wanderlust. He loves to travel; he picks a destination at random, and immerses himself in the local culture.
His latest journey takes him to rural Mexico, away from the tourist areas. He is interrogated by the authorities, convinced that he is working for one of the drug cartels. He gets lost in some caves inside a volcano. Mat is injured, and is treated in a hospital inside the volcano, a hospital that no one is supposed to know about.
After several weeks of worrying about Mat, and not hearing from him, Emily, his sister, gets on a plane from Montreal to Mexico. She is not sure where to start looking, but knows that she has to do something. On the plane, she meets Antonio, a handsome man who also studies caves and volcanoes. Emily feels definite romantic possibilities. Inside the volcano, Emily and Mat reunite, then discover that Antonio works for one of the drug cartels. At that moment, the volcano starts rumbling. Who makes it out before the volcano erupts?
This is a very good start to a series. The author does a first rate job throughout, and it will certainly keep the reader interested.
Meanwhile, a traditional Mayan healer feels called to those same mountains, and a little puppy goes looking for her owner. In the nearby city, tensions grow between the police and the powerful local cartel, all exacerbated by stories of the tourists that seem to disappear or encounter "accidents" in the region. And far away in Canada, Mat's sister begins to worry that she hasn't heard from her brother in quite a while...
There's a lovely fairy-tale feel to this adventure story, especially in the parts set in these beautiful but perilous caverns. It feels like a myth at times, too, because the stakes are high and the situations and dramatic, but our main characters are basically just trying to be good people. This makes it easy to connect to the characters, who are often shown trying to be kind to animals, be good to their family members, or protect their communities.
Overall, The Adventures of Mat Rufs: BOOK ONE Mexican 'Jewel' is an adventure story of everyday people uncovering dramatic secrets.
