The Adventures of Mat Rufs: Book One - Mexican 'Jewel' by Anna Liachenko is a fast-paced adventure novel with vivid narration.
A 25-year-old adventurist, Mat Rufs, finds his role as a tourist quickly changing into a captive, as the caves and mountains of the Mexican mountains echo with a conspiracy of international proportions. The story has a few subplots involving various characters:
- Village mystic healer and his daughter
- Mat and his sister
- Police chief and his woes, and, of course
- Good guys versus the bad guys
The author brings all the storylines together in an engaging main plot that keeps one guessing till the end. At the onset, young Mat seems too clever for his age, concocting a story, just as he is recovering his senses after a blow. Mat'a action sounds implausible but the story keeps your attention, because of the various subplots and plethora of information.
Within the pages of a dangerous adventure, there is much to learn and know about the mysterious, mystical, and marvelous land of Mexico. The author has researched and shared meaningful information about ancient customs, geographies, cartels, international influences, and most importantly local lives. The characters are sketched with details that one remembers. The description of the caverns and mountains is attractive, while the sinister plot is well-developed.
Animal lovers will appreciate the role of dogs in the theme. Thriller fans will love how the story blazes through. Drama enthusiasts will enjoy how the past and present converge in this book to raise thought-provoking questions. The chapters are short and crisp giving a steady pace to the reader.
I would have liked a more distinct Mexican flavor to the book cover - maybe a painting or a symbolic photograph. The title "Mexican jewel" also sounds a bit mundane and an exciting title would have made the cover more enticing. I was also distracted by some typos and felt the book could have done well with a round of professional editing. There is a lot happening in this book and one needs to keep the same tone, texture, and flavor throughout the narration. All in all, this is a good book to enjoy over the weekend and it "will keep you up at night." Mat Rufs has the potential to become a beloved adventurer with more books in the series.
