Heartwarming & heartfelt, this would make a delightful read-aloud or bedtime story, appealing to young readers & the young at heart. Kudos!
In this whimsical, playful story, Nobby Lob-lolly is a magical village of Tree Wee homes that are nestled within an ancient tree in The Forest of Fine Repute. When young brothers Birpus and Bulbus go exploring in the forest to collect things for dinner, they are chased by a giant purple dragon who spews hot, sour milk from his nostrils. When the brothers flee in fear, it isn’t long before they realize that Duncan the dragon is lonely in the forest and is only looking to make some friends to play with.
Looks can be deceiving. Two playful brothers learn that a second look coupled with kindness can transform fear into friendship in this whimsical and captivating picture book by Michael Albanese.
Birpus and Bulbus are two Tree Wee brothers. They’re running for their lives through the Forest of Fine Repute when we meet them in this lithe and lively story. Fleeing a dreaded purple dragon with scales and big teeth, the brothers are bee-lining to safety in Nobby Lob-lolly with their “Grand Wees.”
But when the dreadful dragon corners them, Birpus and Bulbus realize they’re trapped! Prepared for the worst, the brothers close their eyes and steel themselves to meet their fate. But instead of meeting their doom, the brothers open their eyes and find the dragon has a friendly grin on his face. Was the scary purple fellow with big teeth really out to eat them? Or was the dragon with the terrible sour milk breath just looking for some friends and a game of tag?
Everything changes once the brothers realize Duncan the dragon is just lonely and wants to be friends. The brothers soon learn how a simple act of kindness can transform fear into friendship, love, and family in this sweet and gentle picture book. It’s just Too. Cute!
Weighing in at about forty pages, The Adventures of Birpus & Bulbus - The Sour Milk Dragon is a lithe and supple read. There's plenty of action and the story moves quickly. It will keep young readers or listeners turning pages until the very end.B oth text and images engage the senses with bright and beautiful illustrations and a bubbly, effervescent voice. I especially loved the illustrations of the treehouses and firefly lights of Nobby Lob-lolly. The lyrical prose lends itself to a charming read aloud.
This charming picture book is certain to be a hit with its target audience of children ages four to nine years old. Heartwarming and heartfelt, Birpus & Bulbus would also make an excellent read-aloud as well as a good bedtime story, appealing to both young readers and the young at heart. Wee-End… or is it “Wee-ginning”? Delightful!
Birpus & Bulbus is a new picture book series chronicling the adventures of two Tree Wee Brothers living in The Forest of Fine Repute. Keep an eye out for the next installment! I certainly will!
