A young woman escapes a cult and comes face-to-face with the demon she was supposed to be sacrificed to.
That Time I Took Down A Cult is the first instalment in Rebel Carter's Cozy Cult Cuties series.
Blossoms are women who are raised to be the 'perfect wife'. Buffy Martinez is one of the next in line to be wed to a notable cult member, having been promised a life of prosperity with her new husband. However, in a shocking turn of events, Buffy needs to leave the altar in a fight to save her life. That Time I Took Down A Cult is a fantasy romance that deals with shady cults and the supposed god to which they dedicate their 'sacrifices'.
I thought that the concept of this book was so interesting upon reading the blurb, I haven't really seen cults or cult members explored in the romance/fantasy genre before, so I figured it would be an interesting read. We are immediately introduced to our FMC, Buffy Martinez, as she prepares for her wedding to a highly regarded member of the cult. We learn that young women are considered 'Blossoms' and have their marriages arranged for them, however, the reality of what it means to be a Blossom quickly becomes apparent, and it's harrowing.
The opening of this book was exciting and fast-paced, and upon meeting Wrath, our demon MMC, I was hooked and invested. It was at this point that we understood what the bulk of the plot would be (Wrath decides to take Buffy as his wife, instead of as a sacrifice like she was intended to be) and from that point onwards, everything felt a bit... stale. I'm not typically a fan of the insta-love trope, and this book is very much that, to the point where there's a lack of development and chemistry between Buffy and Wrath.
A lot of this book felt like filler, and this is reflected in the page numbers. It was sort of hard to follow the plot and some descriptions were inconsistent. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would but it's definitely a decent read if you can overlook the flaws.
