Synopsis

Wally is an eleven-year-old whiz-kid who builds robots that perform everyday tasks like weeding and ironing. Word of his talent spreads, and when the sinister Dr Criplash offers him a small fortune to build a special robot, it looks like an opportunity too good to refuse — his family needs the money.

But Wally is horrified when he discovers what the robot will be used for. He and his friends are soon plunged into a world where nothing is what it seems and nothing works the way it’s meant to. And if he doesn’t do what the evil doctor wants, his nearest and dearest will pay the price.

Can Wally outwit Dr Criplash, save his family and find a way to stop the robot doing what it was built to do?

Stop! Robot! by Gaz Anson is an exciting middle-grade novel about an eleven-year-old whiz kid named Wally, who builds robots for everyday tasks. When the sinister Dr. Criplash offers him a small fortune to build a special robot, it seems like an opportunity too good to refuse - his family needs the money. However, Wally is horrified when he discovers what the robot will be used for, and he and his friends are soon plunged into a world where nothing is what it seems, and nothing works the way it’s meant to. If he doesn’t do what the evil doctor wants, his nearest and dearest will pay the price.

The interactions between Wally and his sister, as well as his friends Mindy and Fitzy, are spot-on, and the dialogue is credible and crisp. The writing is also top-notch, with vivid characterizations and descriptions that make the story come alive. The storyline is part detective, part creative problem-solving, part technology, and part camaraderie/teamwork as Wally and his friends join forces to solve some pretty sticky problems.

What makes Stop! Robot! unique is the way it presents "food for thought" within the storyline. It explores the implications of advanced technology in the hands of those with evil intentions and how it can be used for destruction. It also touches on the theme of family and how far one is willing to go to protect them.

Overall, Stop! Robot! is a fast-paced, tightly written, and expertly paced novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. It's a fun and entertaining read that will appeal to young readers who enjoy adventure, technology, and a touch of mystery. Gaz Anson has done an excellent job of creating a world that is both believable and engaging, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
