Once inside the “federation,” young readers are introduced to who “Senators” are and what they do in this fast-paced read. Senators are split into three main groups: The Demis, the Repubies, and the Indies. Each group has its own colorful flag.
The Demi Senate Leader is Senator Rumples. The Repubie Senate leader is Senator Dumples. The Indie Senate leader is Senator Mumples. Each leader offers voters a party with different “sweet treats” if they vote for their particular group.
Readers are encouraged to engage with the process as they are asked “Which will you choose?” If you vote one way, then you are directed to skip to a designated page to “see what you get.” If you vote another, you are directed to another page for sweet treat results, and so on.
Responses are creative and complemented with bright, vivid illustrations of sweet treats. You may want to bring your own fork or spoon. Readers are then whisked to “Capitol Hill” on “Planet Judge” to see what happens during debates.
Space Elves is a clever take on the often confusing and perplexing topic of government and politics. The pacing is nimble and the tone is warm and inviting. The story covers some of the inner workings and basic functions of government in a way that’s both engaging and enlightening for little ones.
Thoughtfully written with vivid illustrations, the book’s fantasy/sci twist may make the subject less daunting and more accessible for young readers or listeners. Supple and lithe, the story is entertaining and educational without feeling like school. My favorite part is when readers are encouraged to get involved and add their own voices to the process.
Some alert readers may question the call to “vote Indie” so “we can stop the Demis and Repubies controlling all the decisions and we can make sure everyone is taken care of.” Others may take issue with “Ask your parents and teachers why the Demis and Repubies aren’t being nice and sharing” as overly simplistic or presumptive. Some may question the role and function of government presented in this book. But this is a picture book, not a campaign ad or a thesis on Con Law.
In the final analysis, the book’s emphasis on getting involved is definitely worthwhile, just like the sweet little blue mouse at the end!
