Join Silas for a wonderful adventure in Silas, The Grue, & A Didgeridoo, a ridiculously delightful picture book that follows young Silas on a journey of the imagination. Silas makes a creative mistake by painting his name on the living room wall. He's sent to think about his choice in a corner of the room, but his time in the corner doesn't go as you might imagine.
Silas meets a host of creatures in the sky, a fun brass band and acrobats to help them land. By the time his mom asks him to come to dinner, Silas and his new imagined friends are having too much fun. This book shows the power of creativity in children and teaches emotional regulation in a fun and exciting way.
As parents or teachers, we have all experienced our young artist's overwhelming need to leave their mark on a wall or other surface. Silas, The Grue and a Didgeridoo opens with the child sent to time-out for writing his name on the wall in paint. While standing in the corner is no laughing matter, the illustration of the cat leaning back on the wall next to Silas, arms crossed, was pretty funny. He looked so unamused and rather bored.
The dreaded corner should be a no-fun zone. Kids are sent there as punishment for misdeeds. Silas faces the boredom blues as he has time to think about his actions. However, instead of reflecting on what he did wrong, his mind wanders to a world of unique characters and action galore.
The wondrous animals, scenes, lingo, and animal names reminded me of creatures you'd see in a Dr. Seuss book. They were drawn incredibly well with great attention to detail. I liked Trunkopolis very much because he was SO fluffy! (Credit: Len Peralta, illustrator)
Time in the corner shouldn't be a pleasant encounter, but I can see why Silas wanted to miss dinner for a few more minutes in the party zone. Seriously, who wants to leave a good party?
Silas, The Grue and a Didgeridoo is a picture book that nurtures curiosity and imagination while building language skills in children. It's an exciting story that will thrill and delight children as young as two.
There was only one page where the text could have been easier to see. It was the brass band marching down the aisle. The text, unfortunately, overlapped the overhead compartment just a tiny bit. Other than that, everything else was clear and concise.
I 100% recommend this book to any child who loves stories featuring wacky words, crazy creatures, and non-stop action.

I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
