What a cute book! I zipped through it, and really enjoyed the inclusive, family-centred messages. I used to have a great time with my cousins when I was a kid and this book took me back to those happy playful days with my Gran and cousins. The two cousins in the book make a princess castle and decorate it with their artwork and treasures and it’s such a lovely positive message.
Schoocie happens to have two daddies, which is handled in a matter of fact way, which I loved. There’s no drama, no explanation or questioning, her family is what it is, and I found that refreshing and positive. The book is about fun and the love of family, and the straightforward nature of the language and approach is excellent.
As this is a picture book, I should mention the pictures! The book is bright and colourful and the images would be attractive to children. I don’t love the typeface of the actual writing, but it doesn’t detract from the overall look and feel of the book. I read a pdf format on my tablet, so I can’t say exactly what the book would look like as a hardback/paperback edition. If you’re thinking of getting this book as an ebook, it is definitely readable. I like the idea of getting kids into kindle/ebooks, but then I love the idea of kids reading in general.
Overall, a super book that you could read with a younger child or a slightly older child could read to themselves. There were a couple of words that I thought might be challenging for a young reader, but on the whole this could be given to a child to read by themselves.
Great little book.
