Who are the Roglins? Do you know? -They're hidden in the grass below.
Some tiny hands and tiny hooves Look closely you might see their moves. A charming collection of rhymes about mysterious woodland creatures called Roglins. Written and illustrated by Anna Spencer.
Roglins by Anna Spencer is a book for children. Filled with themed rhymes, the poems within would be engaging for any youngster. The poems are whimsical looks at daily tasks.
Before getting into the poems, we should talk about the Roglins themselves. Illustrations of these little creatures permeate the book with one per poem. They look like court jesters with the draping horns. Yet they are also very mythological in appearance, with Hoover feet and large heads on thin bodies. They would be at home in a Pixar or Dreamworks movie, but in a good way.
The poems themselves are rhymed every line, with just a few exceptions. There are some forced rhymes, but I only see that as an adult who actually listened to his English teachers in high school and college. For the target audience, they work and maintain the theme of the poem. The poems start with an introduction to the Roglins and move on to create an adventure for the day. They begin with waking up and preparing to leave the house and progress through little discoveries and activities for the day. Though each poem is separate, they join together to form a narrative.
One problem I noticed was that the book is not formatted for e-readers. I tried the book on a Kindle Fire HD 10 and an iPad Air using the Books app. Keeping in mind that this is an advanced reader copy, there is time to tweak the formatting of the file. Itβs really fairly minor since fixing it should be easy, but definitely made navigation of the book a bit tough.
Barring the technical problem, this book is cute and relevant to its young target demographic. Parents will have fun reading the little rhymes, and young children will be enthralled with going on an adventure with new friends. For this reason I give Roglins five stars.
I am an avid reader of almost any genre, the only exception being bodice-ripper romance books. I read an average of 200 books a year. As such, I am always looking for new authors to try.

I moved to UK in 2004. I have always enjoyed painting and drawing and have sold art internationally, but decided that creating something to be published for children was more where my passion lies. This is the first book. view profile
