The Case of the Missing Bear is the first of a series of children's books starring PC Dill Pickle, a Police Constable who lives in the fridge. Each book invites its reader (and little listener) to help solve a problem, be it finding a lost toy, investigating a strange sound, or working as a team to remedy common issues faced by 3-5 year-olds.
Children are mesmerised by the colourful illustrations, entertained by the funny characters, and swept up in the rhythmic style of storytelling.
Book 2, The Case of the Scary Sound is scheduled for release Feb 2023.
It's not every day I read a book whose main character is a dill pickle and a constable too. In fact, I think this might be my first.
Amazon's recommended reading age is 3-5. First, I don't believe many United States kids in that age bracket will know what a constable is. They are more familiar with terms like a cop or police officer, possibly sheriff. I think PC in the title will need to be explained to most young listeners that it refers to "Police Constable." Without reading the book's contents or the blurb, I had no idea what PC stood for, so non-readers would not know either.
PC Dill Pickle and The Case of The Missing Bear by Hani Bruce is a rhyming book with inventive and unique characters. I know from the blurb that Sherry and Terry are cherry tomatoes, but the drawings made them resemble red peppers or beets.
As the constable helps Sherry and Terry hunt for the missing honey bear, readers meet many food-related items with human qualities: eyes, arms, legs, etc. I liked how each character had their personality. Greg Egg was quite the stinker. Literally! (Illustrations by Adam Shires)
Young children will find PC Dill Pickle and The Case of The Missing Bear by Hani Bruce entertaining. They'll laugh and probably call out the character names. They'll absolutely have fun spotting the clues! For those too young to know all the names, I would use this book as a resource to teach them.
Since children in the recommended age group might get confused about PC, constable, and what Sherry and Terry are, I'm deducting a point from my overall score. Children three years and up will love hunting for the missing honey bear alongside Police Constable Pickle, Sherry, and Terry.
