"Over in the Meadow" is a popular rhyming song from 1870. Many variations exist, but they all share similar traits. They all rhyme numbers with animals or bugs found in the meadow.
Over in the Meadow will appeal to households and schools for many reasons. First, the author uses simple text and familiar animals, insects, sounds, and action words. These traits make this rhyming book perfect for those beginning their independent reading adventure. Second, families and teachers can use the book as a resource for kids learning to count from 1-10 or recognize numbers in print. Third, toddlers can use the images to practice naming objects on the page and any potential sound an animal might make.
Last but not least, parents and educators can incorporate this rhythmic book into music time.
I applaud Chandler Strange's spin on the classic tune. They created rhymes that are (mostly) easy to understand. For example: Three with tree, hive with five, and heaven with seven. The only rhyming line kids might not grasp is for number nine: "light turns fine." Besides that, everything else should be easy for school-age kids to comprehend.
While I loved the book's rhymes, I loved its artwork even more. The watercolor images were beautiful. My favorite was the orange fish swimming in the bright, blue water. Stunning! I would change the font color on this page. The white text did not pop off the page. The deer running through the meadow was also lovely. Unfortunately, the text didn't stand out on the blue background either. I also had difficulty reading the "Glossary of Animals" on the file I received for the book. I suggest enlarging the text. Besides those pages, everything else was easy to see.
Over in the Meadow is a wonderful rhyming kid's book based on a classic tune. Its simple text and beautiful illustrations make this a book your family will cherish for generations.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, Threads, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
