A profound journey of resilience, "Out of the Cocoon" is a soaring legacy of healing, strength, and the triumph of Light.
I do not think I am worthy enough to have been a reader and reviewer of Out of the Cocoon: The Journey to Becoming. I do not think my spirit was so deserving.
There are no words in the English language that would best describe the immensely profound power that each line of Rosemary Esehagu's prose conveys. I do not think I know how to best describe the intense and transformative journey I went through as I traversed through this book of poetry. And I do not know how to properly summarize what a glorious legacy of strength and resilience this book truly is.
I devoured it in one sitting; I will do my best.
As a victim of sexual abuse who must keep silent about her perpetrator, I saw myself in a lot of Esehagu's poems. I felt myself in a lot of her lamenting. I was witness to a lot of my own healing as she marched through hers - no matter how sticky, dark, and divisive as it can sometimes be. My journey is incomparable to hers, but I felt united with her in that darkness. However, I do not believe you need to have trekked through those waters to understand the waves her poetry makes. This is evident in the fact that I am not an African woman, but I could feel the pain of her struggles through identity in her text.
I saw myself most in her poem, Awakening the Phoenix (I also have a phoenix tattoo, which is representative of my rising out of the ashes of my PTSD). "When Love is Pure" was a poem that reminded me of the importance of healing my trauma for my child, something that Esehagu also writes about in her dedication and introduction. Her message throughout every piece is that Light always wins, no matter how much darkness tries to snuff it out. There is always a soaring transformation to be found in the things that try and destroy us.
Esehagu writes, "Avocacy is my wing, and I take flight, I fly high to my imagination's calling. I aspire, I inspire. I am." This collection of poems is most certainly a legacy that will inspire all who read it.
My only question: why does this incredible author not place the well-earned DR. in front of her name on the cover of this collection? She's earned it, as she has earned her wings. Let it soar.
