Everly must catch him before he catches her.

This gripping thriller will captivate true crime fans until a shocking conclusion reveals an unforgettable culprit.

The dark and twisting young adult thriller Only the Pretty Ones by Niki Keith captivates readers with its compelling premise and emotionally stirring story. The narrative centers on Everly, a damaged teenager who fabricates an online persona in an attempt to attract the interest of Finn, an enigmatic stranger in her tiny town. However, when a serial murderer becomes interested in her phony image, her seemingly innocent plan goes awry.

Keith skillfully combines dark humor, psychological drama, and suspense to produce a novel and unpredictable story. Everly is a flawed but likable lead character whose impetuosity propels the story along. Even as her decisions become more dubious, her personal conflicts—coping with loss, envy, and self-worth—make her a compelling figure. Everly's growing apprehension is reflected in the small-town atmosphere, which is shown with vividness and a sense of claustrophobia and discomfort. Everly and Finn have an interestingly strained relationship that is tinged with both curiosity and suspicion. Everly's mental anguish is further complicated by the subplot involving her ex-boyfriend Kyle, which makes her eventual involvement with a murderer seem both believable and unsettling. Although the novel's atmosphere and suspense are excellent, some of the story twists are too unbelievable. Although horrifying, the serial killer's obsession with Everly seems undeveloped in contrast to her emotional development. Furthermore, Everly's sister Lani and her best friend Asha are examples of supporting characters that don't have the same depth, making their positions seem a little flat.

Nevertheless, Only the Pretty Ones offers a suspenseful journey with a memorable denouement. Readers who enjoy thrillers with a strong, imperfect protagonist and those who enjoy true crime will adore this book. Keith's examination of online persona and the perils of dishonesty gives this captivating debut a contemporary, provocative edge. Ideal for readers who enjoy true crime and psychological thrillers, this book enthralls until its shocking climax.
