Loved it! 😍

The story is very good, but the duration is very short. It would be more exciting if the pages and the story were longer!

Synopsis

Eddie Ankin is back!

Former Marine Raider turned Hollywood stuntman Eddie Ankin was supposed to be enjoying some downtime on the sun-soaked beaches of Oahu. But when a fiery surf instructor named Mia pulls him into a scheme involving a powerful hotel tycoon and a stolen parcel, Eddie’s vacation turns into a high-stakes race for survival.

With a group of Hawaiian bikers on their tail and a corrupt businessman pulling strings from behind the scenes, Eddie has to navigate a criminal underworld as treacherous as the island’s sharp reefs. With tensions rising and the stakes higher than ever, Eddie’s quick thinking and combat skills are put to the test as he works every angle to outmaneuver his opponents. But the deeper he gets involved, the more he realizes that Mia isn’t the only one with a target on her back.

Fans of John Corey and Jack Reacher will be hooked on this action-packed thriller as Eddie battles on land and sea to keep Mia—and himself—alive.

This story offers a captivating narrative experience, immersing readers in the atmosphere of Hawaii by blending elements of adventure, mythology, and human life within an exotic setting. By exploring themes of history and local culture through beliefs surrounding the Night Marchers, and presenting characters with unique backgrounds and personalities, the story effectively creates an engaging atmosphere. The character of Eddie, as the narrator, provides an interesting perspective, drawing readers closer to the world of a Hollywood stuntman who is trying to heal both physical and emotional wounds. Mia, as the mysterious surfing instructor, adds tension and intrigue to their relationship dynamic, followed by supporting characters that diversify the storyline.

However, while the story is rich in potential, there are areas that could be further developed to enhance the narrative's strength. One of these is a deeper exploration of the Night Marchers mythology, which, though introduced mysteriously, lacks sufficient context or explanation to fully connect readers with this legend. Adding more information through dialogue or character reflections on the history and meaning behind the Night Marchers could enrich the narrative and provide additional depth.

Furthermore, the pacing of the story, which is somewhat slow in the beginning, could be a challenge as too much time is spent building the atmosphere and describing the surroundings without enough events that add tension. While creating an immersive setting is important, readers may find the story more compelling if it moves faster toward the central conflict, particularly the protests, the hotel tension, and the presence of spiritual spirits. The tension that builds around the characters, especially regarding the protests and the sacred land debate, could also be given more space to evolve, providing more background or personal motives for those involved in the protests.

The conflict between the protests and the hotel development has great potential, but the story does not delve deeply enough into what is at stake in this conflict, both from the perspective of the demonstrators and the hotel developers. More explanation about the values upheld by the local residents, or more intense interactions between these characters, could add greater weight to the story.

Supporting characters, while interesting, are slightly underdeveloped in the narrative. For example, DeeDee, who appears close to Mia, or Kyle, who plays a role in the protest, could be explored further, especially in relation to their connection to the main characters. Their presence feels more like a narrative accessory rather than a force that strengthens the plot.

Overall, this story has a solid foundation with an immersive atmosphere and an intriguing premise, but it could benefit from further character development, a quicker and more compact plot, and a more detailed explanation of the local myths and beliefs that are central to the theme. By incorporating these elements, the story has the potential to become a more touching, tension-filled, and memorable tale that highlights the conflict between the modern human world and the traditional beliefs that continue to thrive in the spiritual realm of Hawaii.

Jeremy EliceThis is the second book in the series, which admittedly is written with an eye towards the brevity of more pulp crime writers like Donald Westlake or Elmore Leonard. However, if you enjoyed the book, perhaps you might check out "The Double" which is book one in the Eddie Ankin crime thriller series (though the books are able to be read out of order and still appreciate each one as a standalone). "The Double" is a longer book with a more complex mystery but no less thrills. This is also true of the forthcoming book 3, The Crew which will be out next month. Thank you so much for taking the time to read Night Marchers and review it. It is because of you, the reader, that I am able to tell these stories, which is all I've ever wanted to do with my life.
