Myths, Doves, Tears, and the Rest is a collection of admirably written poems by Martin Boško. It takes you on a journey inspired by Greek mythology while also tugging on the heartstrings with feelings of love, betrayal, and longing.

This book is a collection of poems assembled by the author through one calendar year. The use of imagery, powerful expressions, and moving poems give us an insight into the inner workings of the poet’s mind. The author has shared some of his most intimate moments, emotions, and intentions that make each of his poems memorable. The rhyming nature of the poems was an absolute delight to read and made me want to keep going on and on for more.

When sadness comes as a raging river
I reach into my trusty quiver
To pull out the Arrow made of honey
And heal the wounds that are fresh and bloody.

The book has four sections as mentioned in the title: Myths, Doves, Tears, and the Rest. Even though my knowledge of Greek mythology is quite basic, I still found the poems hard-hitting and extremely pleasing to read. The poems on love capture the heart and soul of the feeling of being in love. As I progressed further, I could not help but feel like I was experiencing heartbreak along with the poet through his poetry. There were many moments where I empathized with the poet and wished for a turnaround in his life. Overall, I highly recommend Myths, Doves, Tears, and the Rest for all those poetry lovers who wish to be taken on a journey of imagination and emotions.

MYTHS

Seek the Well of Wisdom, fellow

One wise owl once told me

And so, I roam the world under the sunlight mellow

To find the land where this magic might hidden be

I drank from a thousand of different springs

I sought the directions of wise old women and men

I listened to every person, to every tale, and every song I hear them sing

And that’s how I found where the Well hidden had been

There is no magic, no shortcuts, no easy way

You cannot cheat the goddess of the Greeks

Wisdom is hidden in books, in stories, in children’s tales

But you must be the one who wisdom seeks

As the thoughts of Night cruelly meander

I await your light like a Czech Leander

To guide me over the river of Sadness

My Hero’s arms purifying my madness

After I appear soaked by the nightly swim

Ready to hear your voice that sings

Like the most beautiful flock of birds

You are a true shepherd of my mental herds

The son of Aegeus, the stories have said

Had entered a maze with nothing but a thread

He would have been lost in the Cretan halls

If not for a gift that was unwrapping on the floor

And when he neared the Labyrinth’s core

And heard a monstrous, petrifying roar

He bravely continues in his steps

Two turns right and one turn left

Then entered a room without a ceiling

Greeted he was by a figure unappealing

Disgusted by the abominable sight

He stood firm, got ready for a fight

The creature watched, got on all fours

And in two seconds, not less, not more

Charged the hero that he just met

Theseus quickly out of charge-path leapt

To let the bull-man hit a wall

Stone was chipped, fell on the floor

And the hero jumped, forced bull-man down

Strangled him till he made no sound

He picked up again Ariadne’s thread

To the princess he owed a massive debt

For he followed it back to start

Where Ariadne, loving and smart

Was waiting for his victorious return

So that they could then turn and escape

As two lovers joined through divine fate

Ariadne’s Awakening

May 22, 2021

Betrayed

By Theseus left forgotten

Afraid

Those sweet lies were rotten

Miserable

Betrayed her own kin

Vulnerable

Eros forced her to sin

Discarded

Like a worthless soul

Broken-hearted

Never again to feel whole

Suicidal

What had she done?

No revival

And nowhere to run…

Danaë on the Sea

Why? Why did you curse me with your lust?

You saw a locked-up maiden

Needed to attain her

It was a must

I have been shielded from man by a prophecy

Sad and lonely in my cellar

Fear makes a prudent jailor

No courtesy

You appeared as a rain of gold

Raped me in my bed

Sentenced me to death

Just a clay to mould

Now I am floating on the sea

With your child

We were left in the Wilds

Can’t you see?

You did this to me

You did this to us

Killed us

How could this be?

Oh, Zeus Almighty…

Waiting Penelope

May 25, 2021

Where are you?

I heard stories that you disappeared…

What did you do?

There’s no way you got outsmarted

Did you forget I am awaiting your arrival?

Did you not think our house would be full of rivals?

Did you forget you have a son?

Why didn’t you come when the war was done?

Other wives have their husbands home

Yet you are leaving me on Ithaca alone

Come back, my love, return to your throne

Come back before my heart turns to stone

Ten years ago, you were stolen by a war

Ten years ago, you stepped outside our door

Yet I have been patiently waiting

By fears and nightmares, I was waking

And I have cried my eyes out more than I can count

This loneliness I feel is not something I can surmount

Come back to our bed, to our tree

Come back to me!

Please!

I beg the gods above

Don’t delay my beacon

Don’t hinder love

The Sun is dawning

Another day without news

Tomorrow’s morning

My watch continues

I’ll be once again looking out my window

Not knowing if I am a wife or widow

You never should have left!

Your forced departure was worse than a theft

Athena, guide home your favourite!

Or don’t you love him no more for his shrewdness and bravery?

Oh gods…

We mortals are but pieces in your lust for glorious wars

Shh. Can you hear it?

People are cheering for my sacrifice

Well, okay, so be it

I absolve my parents of the upcoming filicide

Gods cursed me with my looks

They cursed my mother with sinful pride

Ignoring punishment for hubris described in books

She sentenced me to die

My youth won’t save me

Gods won’t be appeased by regret

It is, as it should be

The Fates have cut my thread

So, I’m going with my head held high

I give my life for that of my people

The sand has run out, the hour is nigh

I am not a goddess’ equal

Arachne

Weave and weave and weave

You shall never leave

We can start! Here, behold my artistry!

Isn’t that a beautiful tapestry?

Oh, I love me a captive audience!

Won’t you agree that Athena never stood a chance?

Well? Don’t you think?

Okay, okay, enough, dilly-dallying!

Final rating! Five? Oh, how thoughtful!

I wonder why others think I’m awful

Must be those jealous songs that some bards sing

I know, times up! Now, you’ll feel a sting

Have to make you rest!

Hope you’ll enjoy the visit of my nest

Weave and weave and weave

You shall never leave

Deianira

June 6, 2021

What have I done…?

I curse thee, Nessus, for your evil wits!

Your wicked whispers deprived me of my Sun

His soul departed from the pyre Philoctetes lit

And I am the assassin that is to blame

I cannot live with this burden of my murder!

My body will soon, too, be engulfed by the purifying flame

Thanatos, come, I won’t delay our meeting any further

The Sirens

June 9, 2021

Ho, ho, hey sailor, quickly turn your boat

Come, come, come closer, so you can our hand hold

Yo, yo, love’s waiting for you dear

Go, go, go forward or we will disappear

Row, row, row your boat, we want to take you home

Don’t, don’t, don’t leave us, or our heart will turn to stone

Here, here, our lovely, you’ll get everything you want

Oh, oh, our sailor, follow our lovely song

Cassandra

June 11, 2021

Oh, how strongly I am missing

Those simpler times when everybody would have listened

Oh, how tired am I

Of being ignored when the end is nigh

Oh, how much did I pay

For choosing chastity over Apollo’s dark rays

Oh, how much will I suffer

From those evil hands that will treat me rougher

Oh, how evil gods can be

When mortals hurt their vanity

Oh, oh, oh

I wish I didn’t know

Echo

June 13, 2021

Never to speak your words again (again, again, again…)

Punished for transgressions of Hera’s man (man, man, man…)

So cruel is the Heaven’s Queen (queen, queen, queen…)

Jealous wife sure can be mean (mean, mean, mean…)

Poor Echo, sentenced without jury (jury, jury, jury…)

An innocent victim of divine fury (fury, fury, fury…)

Deprived of voice, cruel price to pay (pay, pay, pay…)

Tortured by things that she cannot say (say, say, say…)

Oracles

June 28, 2021

Come forward, traveller, we have what you seek

Just ask your question and listen as we speak

Our riddles are easy for those with bright mind

The clever soon know if their stars are aligned

We offer great wisdom, all futures we see

We know all that once were and all that will be

Apollo sings us his beautiful songs

All He says happens, he’s never wrong

So, visit our temple, and sooth there your soul

‘Cause those who know answers, are the ones that feel whole
