Henry and Hazel are best friends who enjoy all the island has to offer, be it in summer, or winter. They also try to understand what is that thing that brings so many visitors to the island year after year.

Henry grew up on Mackinac Island, a small island in Northern Michigan. The serene location has been immortalized in books and on film, and I can see why. With its breathtaking scenery, old-time mode of transportation (horse and wagon), and mom-and-pop shops, stepping into this town is like stepping back in time.
Henry's family has lived and operated a small hotel, The Henry, since 1951. His grandpa built the establishment, but now his dad runs the front desk while Henry greets visitors and assists them with their luggage with the help of Frederick, the family's horse. Henry's mother's role was not mentioned, so I wondered what part she played in running the business.
Henry did not handle his hotel duties alone. His friend Hazel was always willing to lend a helping hand (for some compensation). When the duo was not working, they behaved like typical kids: they rode bikes, ate sweet treats, went sledding, and got into mischief at the bigger hotel in town.
When I say Mackinac Island was small, I mean it was very small. The island's perimeter was 8.2 miles. During wintertime, a frozen lake sometimes connects it to the mainland. There were only two kids in the fifth grade, Henry and Hazel. The writer didn't say, but I'm willing to bet Mackinac Island Public School housed every grade, K through 12.
Mackinac Island is a picturesque small town where you'd go to clear your mind and escape the stresses of everyday living. So, step off the boat and sample the local ice cream and fudge at Mary's Fudge. Visit the Butterfly House. Go to the fort and fire off the cannon. Sit by the water and let the crashing waves clear your mind. And, if you are looking for a beautiful vintage location for your wedding, choose The Henry.
As a reader, I can feel Henry's love for his home. The artist did a wonderful job creating images that could hang on a wall, too. Bravo to you both!
I recommend sharing this lovely book with your children ages three and up and adding Mackinac Island to your vacation bucket list!
