Diabetes can present in children, and like adults, kids need to learn how to manage their medical condition. As My Body Beeps! Growing Up with Diabetes opens, we observe Katie and her mom sitting on a park bench. Her mom encourages Katie to have fun and remember to carry her receiver, and if the device beeps, they need to come to get their diabetic supplies at once. Katie is like so many other kids; they don't want to stop having fun to take meds. Each time her medical device beeps, Katie brushes it off. She'd rather keep playing hide-and-seek instead of stopping to take care of her medical condition. She's also embarrassed that her body beeps and doesn't want the other kids to hear it.
Monitoring your glucose can be a nuisance for kids and adults, but people must watch it. As the kids continued their game, Katie discovered she was not the only kid who relied on medical supplies; Olivia carried a cute blue and purple puppy backpack for their inhaler (asthma).
Many kids may have heard of diabetes through a family member, but if they haven't, Katherine Lockwood (the author) used simple explanations to satisfy readers' curiosity. They also used a staple in many homes to show how to fix Katie’s beeping noise: a juice box. Everyone will walk away with the understanding that if they have a friend or family member whose body beeps, there's a great possibility the person needs their diabetic medicine or something to eat or drink. Katie and kids at home will also discover the importance of listening to your body and never ignoring health concerns.
I enjoyed My Body Beeps! Growing Up with Diabetes very much. I liked the "Let's Talk" section, where readers can reflect on what they've read and draw comparisons to their own lives. I was glad to see the author included the types of diabetes toward the back of the book. Some terminology found in "rare" diabetes paragraph might be difficult to understand, so adults should be prepared to elaborate on the section and/or explain certain words and genetic conditions. The writer also included two bonus activities: pack the owl bag and find the hidden acorns. If you're like me, you'll flip back to the first page to locate all the hidden nuts!
Amazon's recommended reading age is 4 to 8 years.
I've been constructing reviews for over a decade and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Most of the reviews will be featured on my blog (Kam's Place), Pinterest, Instagram, BlueSky, and Goodreads. Don't forget to tip your waitress! :D
