Rosie Gee 2024 book Mr Tiddieās Garden, shares the story of Mr Tiddy, his wife, and their British garden, lawn, and vegetables. Written for kids 3-5 years old, the book presents a quirky, cool grandparent vibe that is fun to share with your toddler.
Mr Tiddy is hardworking, kind, very likable, and in harmony with the plants and animals of the garden. He reaps a bountiful harvest by the sweat of his brow and an admirable dedication to hard work. However, there are passages where the author works too hard. Sometimes saying less can tidy up clunky phrasing. Such as, āWhen Mr Tiddy gets tired, he stops digging and sits on the garden bench to eat the sandwiches he brought in his lunchbox.ā
The illustrations by Emma Thomas are a pure delight. The style is colourful and charming on every page. Even the produce wallpaper is farmer fabulous. Emma Thomas is closing in on an award-winning artist. She presents a rich palette of vibrant flowers. The garden is filled with an ornithologistās dream of singing garden birds, as well as a veritable cornucopia of succulent, healthy vegetables.
Not sure why the cover title uses the alternate spelling āMr Tiddieās.ā This might be confusing for young readers. Also, some of the lowercase letters use white color fill that distracts from the cover design.
Likewise, the full page depicting Mrs Tiddy painting and the produce basket is fun, but it displaces the following seeding image, which feels out of sequence to include after he has already come home.
Rosie Geeās book Mr Tiddieās Garden, tells an idyllic story about the grace of living in our golden years. The story encourages children to enjoy fresh vegetables, and to experience art, creativity, hard work, and a wonder for the outdoors.
In summary, I give the book four out of five stars (4 of 5) because it has elements that would benefit from a fresh review to help bring the prose up to the high level of the illustrations. I eagerly look forward to the final version.
