Another beautifully written horrifying story from the King of Writing (pun intended). I had to calm myself down once in a while.
An author writing an account of an author writing a book. Complicated?
My first King novel and I am left speechless. I deeply admire his writing, for sure.
The plot follows a best selling author Paul Sheldon who seems to have met an accident but fortunately got rescued by his number one fan Annie Wilkes. It only takes a while for him to realize that this beautifully dressed angel is nothing but a Satan in disguise. A psychopath. A cockadoodie (if you'd like to say in her words).
She keeps Paul as her prisoner and gives him a dope to help him survive the excruciating pain after the accident. She is a big fan of him. Paul is famous for his book series 'Misery' although, throughout the plot we learn that in his last book Paul had killed the main character Misery Chastain and thus marking the end of the series. Now, Annie wants Paul to write a sequel to his bestseller and revive Misery. But wait a second, how would he do that?
Paul goes through a lot of torture and his pushed past his limits when he finally decides to escape. He tries and tries and tries. But the results...not so pretty. But he can't be trapped there forever and just simply die, right?
The book entertains an eerie irony, how Annie torchers Paul yet helps him write his best novel yet.
The way the characters have been built and the story progressed it's all too remarkable. Although I found it really hard to remain focused especially in the beginning due to such excessive descriptions and unnecessary details but I guess they're just the perks!
The book is filled with a few gruesome and horrendous descriptions so it's really advisable to first go through the trigger warnings. There were parts where I felt the book was too descriptive and kind of zoning me out but the ending was definitely worth it! (Had my heart pop out of my chest, I swear).
Go ahead and read it!
