Meet the Costa kids...Marco, Pablo, and Olivia are two brothers and a sister who came from the mountains of Ecuador. The three kids grew up in a farmhouse with their parents and very little means. Marco, Pablo, & Olivia is a crafted book filled with nine stand-alone mini-stories that features the beautiful culture of Ecuador, morality, and magic!
Story One
The Costas: Marco, Pablo, Olivia, and their parents move into their new house in Guayaquil, Ecuador. As the three siblings explore their new neighborhood, Marco discovers there is a tryout for a soccer team. Marco is eager to try out, and Pablo and Olivia are there to cheer for him, but Marco will have to face a prejudiced teenager named, Víctor, who is also trying out for the team.
Marco, Pablo, and Olivia is a heartwarming family-oriented Slice-of-Life comic strip showcasing two well-grounded parents and siblings who rile each other in one sketch, and in another, they rally together. They are respectful, confident, and fun-loving youngsters open to change and challenge. Marco Costa, the eldest sibling reveals the tremendous joy the entire family experiences in their move to Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The expressions captured by the cartoonist are worth a thousand words as demonstrated in the panel when Marco, Pablo, and Olivia first view their new home. Their dropped jaws and wide open fixated eyes capture wordlessly their sheer surprise at the size and beauty of their new home.
Marco shares the passion he has for Futbol and the reader gets a ringside view of what sometimes occurs on a sports team. The drawings in the panels are professional, eye-catching, bright, and aptly match the script. The hues of blue, green, and mustard complement the characterizations and the background of the narrative.
I admired the realistic characterization of the sibling rivalry juxtaposed with the sibling closeness that ensured they accompanied each other in any planned adventure.
Ana Cortes Futbol Tryouts provides a smooth, refreshing, easy read for early readers. It is entertaining and it succinctly captures the reality of life for children as they persist in pursuing their dream. Beginning, developing, early readers and young adults who like comic strips and sports will find this comic book to be cheerful, colorful and captivating.
