What I love about the book “Make Your Portraits Magic” by Jake Garn is that it doesn’t make you anxious about the technical aspects of photography. It inspires you by showing you great examples of photos, and not by overwhelming you with lessons that can get in the way of learning photography by heart.
It is not that this book isn’t filled with technical know-how, for it is brimming with information that can help those who want to learn more about photography. But it can simplify the knowledge you need in such a way that you can focus more on your passion rather than stressing yourself for fear of failing to get things right.
This book urges you to be creative and to fall in love more and more with photography. Each lesson is filled with wonderful pictures inviting you to try and to keep on experimenting, to capture beautiful moments with the tools you currently have.
When it begins its lessons, you learn step by step. You are given analogies that are easy to visualize and remember. Even when you’re a total beginner, you can have the confidence you need to start not only a hobby but a true passion you can pursue for life.
I think what makes this book effective is its simplicity. Instead of making it sound like photography is too complex to learn, it encourages the reader by showing him what he could easily do at the moment. For this, there are core principles shared as well as exercises to practice what one has just learned. There is even an invitation to join a community that could help him learn more.
In addition to this, there is also a bit of historical insight within each lesson. It conveys important milestones as well as key people in the history of photography.
As a bonus, I appreciate that this book also teaches about post-processing. It gives you an idea of how various software available today can help you achieve the desired outcome for your photos.
This book is not an encyclopedia that can answer all your questions about photography, but it is a great start for anyone who would like to pursue photography as a hobby or passion for life. Learn the basics or simply re-ignite your creativity and fall in love with photography all over again.
Note: As part of its artistic illustrations, some photos in this book contains nudity.
