"Jasmines in Her Hair" needed to be more considered with which poems made the cut

Synopsis

“Jasmines in Her Hair” by Kalpesh Desai is a must-read for readers who will find resonance with various stages in their relationship journey.

This poetry book is divided into 7 chapters that guide the reader on how to nurture relationships, love, heal, and rediscover themselves. This heartfelt collection uses simple yet evocative language to highlight the power of gratitude in relationships.

It demonstrates that every relationship can be treasured and that there is as much relief in releasing ourselves from our past as there is in finding someone who gives our ability to love a new lease on life. By providing valuable insights into the personal growth process, this inspiring book encourages readers to reflect on a compelling message: you give the greatest gift to your precious self when you start mending your heart’s wounds.

Beautifully written, “Jasmines in Her Hair” is a journey from the first throes of passion to finding the soulmate you have been waiting for your entire life.

Penned by technology entrepreneur, Kalpesh Desai, Jasmines in Her Hair: Poetry for the Soul is a poetry collection that covers the mixed and turbulent emotions typically associated with falling in and out of love, spread across 250 pages of content.

The collection itself is split across six chapters: Prelude, Yesterday's Embers, Resilience, Rediscovery, Memories, Serendipity, and Alchemy. Each chapter comes with a line drawing as the header image, and features poetry centred around the broad themes of lust, through to rejection and self-acceptance. Most of the poems are short and punchy, ranging from a few lines to half a page, and follow a traditional patterns in its layout and rhyming convention.

From the sheer amount of content alone, it is apparent this is a collection which Desai has put some effort into, and there are enjoyable elements deep within some of the lines here and there. Sometimes though, less is more, and there are a number of instances where poems come across as heavily graphic in nature, especially lost with a lustful leaning. Whether they are based on real events experienced by the author, or the work of pure fiction, poetic devices are best deployed when they twist the English language to convey subtle, but deeper, meaning. The lasting impression is significantly reduced when language is deployed as a blunt stick to drive home a point.

Reading through this collection several times it feels like there is countless examples of missed chances. Take "You Had Me At That Smile", a poem which spans three lines:

You had me at that smile,
You lost me
when you gave up on that last mile

As a standalone poem, this does not offer much to the reader beyond an observation of a broken relationship. It feels flat. Had this been used as a springboard to draw wider observations and comparisons of damaged love in the 21st century, then there could have been more potential.

At poetry collections go, Jasmines in Her Hair would have been a more likeable read if it were half the length, and more considered with which poems made the final cut. Less would have been more.

Prelude

I Didn't Love You

I didn't love you,

At least, not in the way

You wanted me to.

I didn't care,

At least, not in the way

You wanted my heart laid bare.

I didn't listen,

At least, not in the way

My eyes would glisten.

I didn't touch,

At least, not in the way

You wanted me to, so much.

I didn't know then,

I wouldn't have those chances again.

I didn't know then,

You can't rewind time to way back when.

Can I Love You a Little Less?

I know I didn't say this to you before,

But is it ok if I love you a little less,

And love me a little bit more?

Unspoken Desires

Sometimes I wonder,

if I could linger,

gaze at you a little longer,

as these feelings grow stronger,

and as those droplets explore,

all that I crave for.

I pray that your divinity,

prays for the same affinity.

I seek,

with my body, mind, and soul.

My thoughts, out of control,

and I wonder,

if holding that hand,

would pull me asunder.

I wonder,

if I can suppress what I feel inside,

when I visualize what the angel hides.

Slumber

When you sense my breath,

Upon your neck,

In your slumber's depth,

know that I am a wreck.

In these dreams of you,

That lay my senses to riot,

I wonder,

Do you dream, too, of how

You are the storm to my quiet?

Safe Haven

What is seduction,

If not love, made

At the sacred junction

Where safe haven is craved?

Between Lines and Elements

What if

love was nothing but the space

between phrases?

Lines that make us smile,

Keep our hearts warm for a while.

What if it is in physics

that we exist,

but it is chemistry that keeps it real?
