A unique concept and a potential for greatness that the story just doesn't live up to.
The name is Bone—JAMES BONE, 007-years-old and licensed to dig. He and his friends are on a secret mission to find fossils from around the globe to share at school. Will they complete their mission in time – or could this be the end of Show and Tell for our brave explorers? James is a die-hard dino buff. Lucky for him, his paleontologist mom enlists his help with a big dig gig at a dino site! Along with his friends Pick, Shovel, and his dog Diggy, our young excavator ends up on a rambunctious, rip-ROARING archaeological adventure! Dr. Archie Ologist is napping on the job. Bonehead tries to beat them to the best finds. And it’s ALL ALLOSAURUS, ALL THE TIME! But rest assured: James always gets his bone. This all-new graphic novel series is designed for a reading audience in the elementary age range and introduces them to the world of James Bone; the international (young) man of misadventures from the Mesozoic!
James and his friends are on a mission to find fossils to share at school’s Show and Tell, but is it really that simple?
The story starts with a great play on the main character’s name and his age and what he likes to do, there are two loyal friends who share his passion, there’s a dog joining them on a hunt for bones, there’s a nemesis, a trusted older figure, and two tiny dinosaurs / dolls to provide comic relief. The story has the setup of a great adventure that it just doesn’t deliver.
The kids’ passion could’ve been used to educate kids more about what exactly it is that they’re passionate about or better explore the world they so enjoy, but it doesn’t. The ‘fight’ with the evil guy is won by sheer luck, and it isn’t much of a fight to begin with. For a first book that is intended in a series, the character introduction and exploration should’ve been done better.
There’s no lesson to be learned, no real obstacles to overcome, no proper exploration of the lives the characters live, and no enriching dialogue…
The concept has the potential to be a great kids’ book or TV show, but this book just doesn’t cut it.
On the other hand, the art work is very well done.
