It's Ok To Be Happy! is a sweet story about the grief a little girl feels after losing her father.
Jazmine feels mixed emotions ever since her father passed away. Sometimes she is happy and sometimes sad. She can't talk to her friends about it because they don't understand. Her mother sends her to a grief support group so she can speak to other kids who are going through the same experience.
The day after her session is Jazmine's dad's birthday. Her mom and her celebrate it along with Jimmy. They have a nice day. At night, her mom let's her know it is okay to feel sad and it is okay to feel happy. After falling asleep, Jazmine sees her father and speaks to him. He let's her know that he is always in her heart.
It is sad to know that some children have to deal with the loss of a loved one. Even as an adult I cannot imagine not having my parents around. Children who have lost a loved will relate to Jazmine. The mixed emotions. The ability not to talk to friends. Missing their loved one and feeling like nothing is the same.
The story felt very real and raw. Children will empathize with Jazmine. Readers will also learn that they can keep the memory their loved ones alive by creating picture albums, celebrating birthdays, and participating in activities their loved ones enjoyed or would have enjoyed. Most importantly, they will learn that it is okay to be happy after a loved one is gone.
