Synopsis

A book for early readers or perfect for a parent to read to a child. The story unfolds as a lonely young boy observes to his delight a group of woodland animals gathering together to enjoy a basket of soup. The lyrical, rhyming verse captures the imagination, revealing a playful group of animals including a fox in pepper green socks. This is a Read and Learn Club publication. There are topics for discussion and fun facts about the animals and new words and ideas to discover. The illustrations are vivid and thought-provoking.

Into the Woods for a Basket of Soup: A Fox in Pepper Green Socks Story, is the first book in a series dedicated to the adventures of the fox in pepper green socks, written by the prolific children’s book author, Thomas Richard Smith, and co-authored by his oldest daughter, Kimberly Smith Andreadis, who is devoted to bringing some of her recently deceased father’s over 5000 poems, stories and articles to life in published print. The full-color, full-page illustrations of the story are provided by Rebekah Keener, who specializes in multi-layered acrylic painting, and who has a keen interest in portraying the individualism and idiosyncrasies of all animals, big or small.

Written in rhyming couplets, Into the Woods for a Basket of Soup: A Fox in Pepper Green Socks Story is a delightful tale, based on one of Smith’s poems, “A Basket of Soup”, that tells the tale of a young boy who ventures into the woods at night to watch the antics of a fascinating red fox. His adventure results in him viewing the behavior of a wide array of animals, including a shy possum, a musical mongoose, a hairy brown grizzly bear, an ardent lizard and a hound dog, and of birds, including a snowy white owl hunting down a pheasant. The whole is told so pleasantly and rhythmically that both readers and listeners (given that this is a picture book that is likely to be read to preschool-going youngsters, as well as read by novice readers) are likely to thrill to the pace at which the story is told.

With Into the Woods for a Basket of Soup: A Fox in Pepper Green Socks Story being a Read and Learn Club publication, the educational aspect of the work is enhanced by a list of topics in question form that are provided for discussion and fun facts about the animals, alongside a picture of each, and including new words and ideas to discover. The book ends with fairly detailed biographies of the authors and illustrator, which should prove to be of interest to the adult (educator) involved with the reading experience.

In brief, Into the Woods for a Basket of Soup: A Fox in Pepper Green Socks Story is so beautifully written and illustrated that it should appeal across cultures and continents to a wide range of children of all ages. Now, I can’t wait to see the other volumes still to come in the same series!

As I have a teaching background, I especially enjoy reviewing books for children, teenagers and young adults. I also enjoy faith-related texts (across the entire spectrum of religions), books on animals and plants and anthologies of writing, whether poetry or prose.

I am the oldest daughter in a family of nine children. I grew up with a father who wrote and read his poetry, limericks, songs, and short stories to us every day. When he was 94 years old and declining in health he asked me to collaborate on this children's book based on a poem that he wrote. view profile
