Book Review: I Will Not Be Ignored by Ed Friedman This time, the author Friedman provides a riveting book called I Will Not Be Ignored, which very humorously juxtaposes the idiosyncrasies, irritations and peculiarities of modern contemporary life. And as Jewison set iconic dialogues in his film, so does Friedman, who possesses the intel despite the overwhelming confusion that is characteristic of authors and deconstructs their work into sharp wits, commendable anecdotes and personal stories. This time, there is a blend of fictional narratives and satire opinion pieces with Friedman’s introspective thoughts on his life which makes the compilation a universal one. The humor particularly in Friedman’s writing is what’s unique. He transforms seemingly mundane and monotonous understanding around life such as following one’s diet or simple reading a map into something that seems magniloquent and trivia. Ed’s a keen observer of social patterns and, true to the book’s premise, the yearning with which society seeks guidance from the media or the media would overload them with self help tips, are amusing, topical and yet simplistic in approach and analysis. Lilli’s skills depict a vast gift, she can effortlessly intermingle mock with deep argumentation, as Harrison depicts AAA’s winding through the column or columns that.
What merges this book in the greatest of all times is there’s a balance. On the one hand we can appreciate the author’s writing gifted with a sense of humor, but on the other hand, it is more self-revealing than self-pitying. He is not going to withhold anything and the lighthearted readers see the reckless man, instead every reader can see the man behind the amusement who was formerly adamant about how to eliminate social or individual suffering or both
The fact that in the past Friedman was a playwright also adds a certain theatricality to the narrative, as every story and story seems to be similar to a play. The book is more than a collection of essays due to his skill to incorporate elements of rich visual imagery and strong characters. The humor, which is often banterous, has an important message, stimulating the readers to enjoy and obtain perspective in times of life’s imperfections. I Will Not Be Ignored is more than just a comedy, having a fine inner blend of irony and wisdom; it has arguments about endurance, change, and humor needed in everyday life.
